She sure did.
Would I pay $20 for this set?
I have to say no.
My daughter has known which primary colors to mix to get green or purple since she was 3 years old... I guess watching YouTube videos must be good for something. She finds mixing colors fascinating, and spent at least an hour mixing our leftover egg dyes together last Easter, until finally they were all brown. So naturally this kit appealed to her, and she spontaneously thanked me for getting it for her. But she also spontaneously started to put it away and get ready for bed after about 40 minutes.
The mortar and pestle included are actually pretty nice, and are the only thing that impressed me as having value even remotely proportionate to the price of this kit. The tiny paint containers do not seal, and will certainly leak if tipped over for more than a few seconds. The original packaging tray would be much better if the paint containers could be removed and replaced with less violent effort, so it could be practically used to store the paints you had already mixed and help keep them upright. The paint colors are very thin... maybe this is OK for watercolors, but I would sure like to see darker, bolder shades. The instructions say to use 3 tablets to mix a paint container of a certain color. We then poured that entire container into the included spray bottle, which is very small. The quantity of mixed paint from 3 tablets was so small it barely touched the end of the spray bottle's suction tube when held vertical. The smallish quantities of color tablets are not going to last very long at this rate. We also found a lot of undissolved gritty residue at the bottom of the paint container when we poured the liquid out... possibly not boding too well for the spray bottle's pump mechanism.
Probably it would be better to have a single wide tip-resistant color tray with many separate paint compartments, each properly sealed by its own flexible pry-off lid. The included magic markers seem fine, but I'd rather buy a bigger set of markers cheaply at a local store. I think egg coloring was actually a better thing, but if you must try these paints I would suggest getting the color tablet refill kit with many more tablets at half the cost of buying this actual kit. You do not actually need the mortar and pestle to mix the colors.
I love that the storage containers have lids so that we could come back and paint again the next day without having to use up more of the tablets.
This is recommended for ages 8+ and for a child playing by themselves I would agree with this age recommendation. However, my 2.3 and 3.5 year olds did great with my assistance.
The kit has everything you need, including some additional things such as markers, black and white wax crayon, a dropper and a mortar and pestle to grind down some of the tables and sprinkle on your paper then use the included spray bottle to spray your paper and watch magic happen!
It's a great indoor activity. The paints are easy and fun to make. You can create normal colors or, as my nephew created, toxic sludge color. My daughter decided everything is better with glitter and added glitter (not included) to her paint for extra sparkle.
The kit contains everything you need except the water (and glitter should your child be like my own daughter). You've got paint brushes, water dropper, paper, even frames for hanging your child's work.
And lots and lots of paint tabs - definitely not a one and done activity. Your child can get a lot of painting done with this kit!
