I own Joseph Edward an upholstery shop in Niceville, Florida. And this knife has been just hands down the best hot knife out there. Other much higher priced cutters don't come with the blade or foot for cutting. That's an extra $65-$85 each on top of the price for the unit, $245.
I love that this has a control for how hot you want to cut your fabric. Currently I'm cutting over 100 yds. of Sunbrella awning fabric for a job. And This cutter has made quick work of that. Just be sure to keep the blade and foot clean of any burnt cuttings and build up. This is very easy with the brass brush that comes with the unit in it's case. While the knife is still hot, just brush any burnt cuttings away.
Overall this is just a great tool, and has held up to some very demanding use in my workroom.
Thank you for your time.
In the meantime, I borrowed another hot knife (Engle) from a friend. This one was more expensive but it heats up faster and cuts way better. The Demand knife was almost always on the highest setting and was still pretty slow cutting through Sunbrella awning fabric. I mentioned this to the Customer Service rep at Demand and they said they have made some improvements to the tool since I bought mine.
Bottom line: my knife was OK and lasted three years with light usage then quit. I'm not that impressed, particularly now that I've tried another brand, and while I like the folks I talked with at Demand I'm not buying another one from them. It's OK for light duty but if you're serious about cutting a lot of fabric there are better tools available.
and the hot knife seals the edges as you cut
it. This knife has an attachment that goes under the fabric
so that it pushes it up to the hot blade.
This is an excellent feature : )
Update: After using it to cut Sunbrella fabric for three projects, the tool has essentially become a paper weight. Pull the trigger and the indicator comes on, but no heat. As others have stated, it does not last long.

Yikes, it only lasted through one project and I was careful. Great concept, good design, not just doesn't stand up even to light use.Published 5 months ago by gcssays
Do a lot of canvas work on our boat and this always makes the job easier and better.Published 16 months ago by Ken
Very happy with how fast it cut thru archery cloth and paintball cloth. Had to cut over 600 feet and did it with ease.Published 19 months ago by Craig Bell
Great alternative to the high priced green version. I'm new to marine canvas and do it primarily as a hobby and to save money. This works great for me. Read morePublished 20 months ago by BrianD
Works perfectly. I used it to cut fabric. It works great on the straight-away, but not so good at curves which is probably more operator error than anything else. Read morePublished 21 months ago by Rubber Duck
