Mitchell Owens is the decorative arts editor of Architectural Digest and the former interior-design director of Elle Decor. He has contributed to the New York Times, The World of Interiors, Departures, Travel + Leisure, and other publications. Paige Rense is the editor emerita of Architectural Digest, where she served as editor in chief from 1975 until 2010.

I read, browse, admire hundreds of design books. They're free from the library, which is great, since mostly they're not inspiring, often boring, sometimes ugly in my opinion. This book is different. It's beautiful and inspiring. This is one to own even if like me, you only want to own a few. Tom Britt is a true designer genius. Yes, the rooms are way out of reach for those of us for whom $200K is a whole house, not one of the mirrors in the book that clearly cost that much or more, but art & creativity belong to everyone. I already got the best idea from reading it once. I had thought to paint the open door frame to the walk-in closet in my small bedroom sterling silver. I haven't done it yet because yes, it'll match but it'll also stand out too much. Then the lightbulb went off from one picture in this book of a kitchen and how the cabinets are painted. In addition to painting the door frame I'll also paint lines inside the panels of my bedroom door silver. Now the silver on one door frame and the other door will match and compliment, create balance in the room. It'll look amazing for $30 of paint, a roll of painters tape, and a couple of afternoons. That's what genius art & design does for us. We're inspired to make our own humble living spaces more beautiful with materials & tools in our budget. Totally worthwhile book.
