This novel goes back and forth telling the story of Daniel, a man who is living life as a hobo while he learns that he can't run far or fast enough to get away from his nightmares, and his wife LaDaisy, who has been left behind to care for their children and his father at a time when the gift of a dozen eggs is enough to mean the difference between feeding your children or having them go to bed hungry. She struggles with bitterness and anger at her missing husband, but struggles even more with the position he's left her in back home.
I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next, and the author's vivid descriptions of hot summer evenings in the kitchen and frightening nights in a boxcar kept me clicking from page to page until much too late into the night.
But author Bonnie Turner puts her skills to work with a story that goes far beyond the courage and fortitude of poor people struggling for survival in desperate times. Her sympathetic, true-to-life characters endure dramatic, often violent, conflicts that could rip apart any family, break any bond, and doom the greatest relationship. The ordeals of Daniel and LaDaisy will make you angry, test your faith, give you hope, and break your heart. And all of it is made more painful by a nation in economic shambles.
