This book truly is a practical tool. Added bonus: A bibliography for those who want to learn more about any approach or the theory behind some of the text.
Another great useful book that I use alongside this one: Strachan, D. (2007). Making questions work: A guide to what and how to ask for facilitators, consultants, managers, coaches, and educators. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
Some of the things that worked particularly well for me are:
* The `right brained' approach of the book, lots of illustrations
* The visuals model the visual organizers facilitators use
* The facilitator fundamentals section gets to the basics
* The segment on difficult dynamics and facilitation problems
* The `pathetic agenda' checklist
This is a wonderful reference book with humor and heart. It is a practical handbook that every facilitator should have.

When I first read through this book - and again later in Sam's workshop this book is based on - I was struck by how straightforward and commonsensical it is. And the thought right after that was that I've seldom seen it practiced. The exciting part is that with this knowledge and diligent preparation, anyone can do this reasonably well.
I'm a mid-level manager who in addition to leading my own team meetings, I facilitate or participate in a number of committees, communities of practice and work groups.
This body of work has taken me to a new level in these settings. I cannot recommend it enough. The worshop is even better for experiential learners.
