It was interesting as an overview, and it had some good photos. However, if you really want to learn about the life of Frederick Douglass, you really need to read one of his autobiographies. He wrote 3 of them, and they are available on Amazon. I led a really good discussion with our book group. The members were very involved in the discussion. We also discussed elements of race relations in our own lives. This is a group of great women, every one of whom was impacted by Frederick Douglass and his story. All seem to truly want to see people of all races treated with dignity and respect. Reading this book along with the autobiography is a great step toward this goal.

This book is a historical biography and it is interesting because it is a good biography and is very detailed about Frederick Douglass's life. He wrote many autobiographies although this isn't one of them. He was a diplomat and he loved music which I liked because I think the music of that time was really good. I found this book to really teach you about the person Frederick was and not just the jobs he had. He had so many different professions but the book makes you feel that you learn about who he was as a person. I would recommend this book for ages 10-13 and I give this book 4 stars out of 5.

I found that this book had good information. However, as a middle school student who has trouble focusing, I found the book quite boring after the first 40 pages. It was hard to stay interested when the book was spewing facts at you not in chronological order. The visuals were very helpful when reading because you can use them while reading if you get confused or just want more information. I think the reading level of this book is for 6th graders and above. As a 13-year-old student, I would not read this book again if it was not for school work. I think that this book would be a great resource if you are doing research of Frederick Douglass or the abolition of slavery; but otherwise, I would not recommend this book to anyone.
