To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. When you have been around as long I as I have you really don't expect to ever see something completely new and wonderful. Well, this album is that. And yes, many of the songs are in Hawaiian, which I don't know, and I don't care. Maybe he is reciting the Hawaiian alphabet for all I know. But the sound and the heart of it comes across wonderfully. I have to sympathize with the native Hawaiians who are mindful that their homeland was taken by a coup over a hundred years ago and their culture is under danger of disappearing. Here is someone who worked to try to preserve it. 100% rating. Not much else I can say. Country Roads (john denver) hawaiian version? Wow John would have loved that. Over the Rainbow? 800 million views on youtube.

I won't drag on but believe me when I say you'll be very happy you actually paid for this album, instead of ripping it. Why? mainly because it's enjoyable, simple as that. The Hawaiian influence and culture and that most precious of all things family, is at the front of Iz' s music, but the songs and lyrics also take you to a place that is a happy place, both metaphorically and in the flesh and the music also denotes the reality of what the US and the mighty tourist dollar and millionaire mansion owners and western culture has done to dampen the true culture of the traditional native Hawaiian inhabitants, all because of a prdetty view and because they can. 5 stars hardly seems enough for Israel's endeavours but I for one am eternally gratefu, that he did, even if for only the fact that Hawaii 78 has helped me get my daughter asleep on many a dark night, Cheers Iz, RIP.......Malama Pono

When we travel to Hawaii, one thing we take with us is IS's or Israel Kamakawiwole's beautiful Music. if you saw the film 50 first dates you listened to his songs as sung by him. He was a star over the Hawaiian Island chain. and then, before anyone knew he had slipped away from us. Many good people feel his fine music still lives onward. His version of "Over the Rainbow" is the one I think of now. I doubt if I'm alone. The young man had a cane sugar voice so sweet, it was always a true joy to listen.

One of our granddaughters posted his beautiful version of Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful world on Facebook in tribute to her grandfather. It reminded me of my earlier thoughts, and I went to Amazon to check out his music. I decided to download Facing Future. What a delightful album. His voice is amazing. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, you will love this album.

Great Album with a couple of minor quirks

I went to Hawai'i for my first time a few months ago and needed to hear some more of the music I heard while there. This album definitely satisfied that need. He has a really great voice, and the tunes are very unique, but distinctly Hawaiian.

The quirks I found are about his speaking during a couple of the songs about his family and personal history, etc. The first time I listened I just found them odd. I'm sure there's more to the story, but it's not something I was particularly interested in hearing as part of the music.

The other quirk is the song about the Hawaiian super man. It's not a horrible song, but in my opinion, it definitely doesn't fit with the rest of the tunes on the album. It's quite a bit pop-py compared to the other songs on the album and just seems like an afterthought or album filler.

But, even with these quirks, I find this album extremely enjoyable, and now that I've been listening to it for a few weeks, I have one or another of the songs in my head at many times throughout every day.

The mixture of traditional instruments with IZ's vocals and a touch of contemporary styling is mirrored by the choice of songs. All of which are masterfully executed.

If you are looking for a cheesy luau CD, go elsewhere. If you are looking to fall in love with a voice and feel a deep respect for Hawaiian culture, then Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is the man for you. This is the highest caliber music available. I suggest listening to the samples ...and then buy the album. You won't regret it.

I bought this after reading a review / recommendation in the new Rough Guide to World Music - I've been quite keen on Hawaiian music for some time and recently I've taken up the ukulele. My reactions are rather mixed: I love the acoustic songs, with simple ukulele accompaniment. Not so keen on the songs in English, whose lyrics are a bit pedestrian, and as I'm no fan of bombast I really can't come to terms with the big production numbers with strings. But there's definitely a lot to enjoy here: the man had a beautiful voice (maybe several different voices) and his uke playing is superb.

I heard Iz` version of somewhere over the rainbow a while ago and loved it. I then stumbled upon it by chance on youtube. Having heard more of his music I thought that I would buy this album . I think it is good,although I am not a fan of country roads. His style was amazing and he seemed unique . Hawai`i 78 introduction at the start is wonderful and also the normal song version at the end.
Great music . Great man. Sorry that he isn`t around now.
