What first attracted me to this book were the title and subtitle. "Devotions" caught my attention because it had been too long since my last experience with a devotional, and "facing storms" is another way of saying "dealing with adversity," the subject of more than a hundred books in my personal library. (I've even written a book on that subject myself.)
This book is loaded with scripture presented to make particular points and with relevant quotations from some of my favorite authors, especially early twentieth century Christian thinker Oswald Chambers. Like me, Zelenka seems to have a love for Chambers' MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, a daily devotional I have read quite a few times.
One of the most interesting segments of Zelenka's book to me has to do with animals in heaven, and she quotes from Randy Alcorn's monumental book, HEAVEN. Like me, Zelenka is a dog lover, and the thought of doggy love in heaven is not a stretch for either of us, even though dogs are not specifically mentioned in the Revelation.
I also like, and needed, the devotion about getting rid of one's "extra baggage," since I have long struggled regarding past sins that have long been forgiven.
During the days that I was reading this book, I felt closer to God than during the immediately preceding days. If you are struggling with adversity, Zelenka's work can give you an edge you need to keep struggling successfully until the problem is behind you. If you are not currently struggling, this book can give you added strength to face the next problem that comes your way.
