About the Author

Daniel Deneffe is the Managing Director of Deneffe Consulting and a former Partner at Arthur D. Little. He is also a Professor of Strategy and Managerial Economics at Hult International Business School and teaches Business Strategy in the Real World at Harvard University’s Division of Continuing Education.

Herman Vantrappen is the Managing Director of Akordeon, a strategic advisory firm. A former partner at Arthur D. Little, he has published numerous articles in a variety of journals, including Long Range Planning, MIT Sloan Management Review, Strategy & Leadership and Harvard Business Review.

Fad-Free Strategy is a very special book. It is at the top edge of profound practical approach to strategy. When Prof. Deneffe told me that he and Herman Vantrappen published a book I wasted no time and ordered it at Amazon. I knew I would not be disappointed, but the book surpassed my expectations. It is a quintessence of what a man must know about strategy in 2020-2030. However do not be overoptimistic - this book is not for everyone.

If you are a baby-boomer, worship Lee Iacocca refuse to understand Asian economic wonder and see yourself at Kellogg’s or Stop&Shop headquarters this book is not for you. If you like to show off by quoting Henry Ford and other barocco-bussiness guys from the past - you will not find anything helpful in the book. You will even be surprised how thin the book is compared to business guru classics.

However if, say, your uncle runs a business and from time to time you share a bottle of Krug with him over a real business talk - this book is for you. If you want to see how your uncle sets the price tags, who his real competitor is and why his business went downslope in the past year - then Fad-Free Strategy is the great book for you.

Even if you prefer more abstract talks with your uncle, but you yourself is involved in business, a start-up or simply follow dynamic entrepreneurial vibe of today the book will show you hidden liaisons, reasoning and essence of events and processes which you still think if beyond one’s control.

And remember Sun Tsu - if your strategy is right even when you lose distinct battles you will win the war.

There are so many books on the subject of "strategy" available on the market and I probably must have read the vast majority of them, mainly due to my long history working as head of strategy in several companies. Because of this, II can easily state that the book Fad-Free Strategy stands out a lot in this universe. Firstly, because the book deals with complex mechanisms in a simple, direct and agile way, always focusing on the execution of the strategy and not on the theory per se, such as, for example, how to analyze and create the best alternatives for clients, deeply understanding their preferences. Other important points are analyzed in a practical and agile way, such as barriers to new entrants, how and when to enter a new market, issues of correct pricing of products and services, among others. In addition, the book contains real cases and exhaustive analyzes that follow the usual flow of approach starting at the Grande Strategy, going through the Operational Strategy until the execution. I strongly recommend that the book be dissected by executives who work with strategy, be they c-level or operational-level, and by academics, from professors to students. Congratulations to the authors for their efforts to bring us this excellent content.
