Review

Excellent! 30 October 2013 | by slabihoud (Austria) See all my reviews John Turturro proofed that he can handle a light comedy as an actor as well as a director. It is easy to see how he got Woody Allen to appear in his film because the story could be by Woody Allen himself and the figure Allen plays sounds as familiar as it can be. Even the Jewish neighborhood fits very well. The movie starts out with no waste of time as a Woody Allen-style comedy without overdoing it. Allen coaxes Turturro, who works in a flower shop to become a hired lover for rich middle aged ladies. They share the money he gets and Allen spends it for the black! family he lives with. This partnership works out pretty fast and quite successful. But then the story does a sudden turn into deeper emotions when Allen connects him with the widow Avigal who is a devoted Jewess who after two years still mourns her dead husband... Although many scenes begin as a comedy some end on a very touching note. John Turturro knows when it is best to let the audience guess what will come next. Although a bit of a fairy tale story he never completely leaves the bounds of reality, especially in the end of the film. I left the theater with a smile. The whole movie long I thought I was watching a movie that Woody wrote, and only realized it was written and directed by John Tuturro during the closing credits. I'm a big fan of Woody, and I was like, "Wow, this a bit more daring, subtle, and deep than Woody's other works. How did this not get more traction?!" And to be honest, before I even knew Tuturro wrote it, I had already deemed this to be my favorite Tuturro role. He was terse in speech, but his expressions spoke volumes. I was really impressed with the nuance with which he played the character, but it makes a bit more sense now that I know he wrote and directed it.

I was also happy to see Woody in a great role that fit and celebrated his older self. For his own movies, it's almost like he aged out of being able to play the characters he writes for, but this was different. It seemed like such a natural evolution of the Woody character from the Seventies and Eighties to seem him here as an elderly, scheming, but warm-hearted pimp in a mixed-race marriage. He had all the classic wit and charm, but it was somehow sweeter, like a well-aged wine. I found it very heartwarming.

And I can't fail to mention the mesmerizing charm and presence of Vanessa Paradis. I hadn't seen her until this movie but was instantly taken by her potent feminine presence. I looked her up on Wiki and learned she's dated Johnny Depp and Lenny Kravitz, and that she was the first choice for the Calvin Kine campaign, which she turned down, but launched Kate Moss to stardom. Obviously I'm not the first to mesmerized by her quiet but daunting allure. She is definitely "Top shelf, hard to reach. That's what makes her so good."

This movie surprised me. I found it incredibly interesting, enjoyable, engaging, and unique. I just became a big John Tuturro fan.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. There is barely a difference between this film and a Woody Allen film. That is a good thing. If you like any of Woody Allen’s many fine movies, you’ll like this one.

This movie was included among the movie trailers before the main attraction of the DVD begins. My interest was drawn immediately when Woody Allen appeared in the first few moments. I concluded after a short that this was a Woody Allen film, but I was darned if I could recall this one. Then the trailer advertises, “A film by John Turturro, ....” What? John Turturro wrote and directed this movie.

Don’t be fooled, though. It may say, “by John Turturro,” but it appears to me that Woody Allen was the indirect, if not guiding, inspiration of this funny romp.

This is not a bad thing. You won’t be wasting time watching this movie. The acting is good, good plot, Turturro is a decent director.

It also has all the hallmarks of a Woody Allen film:

A neebish main character.

Upscale New York setting.

A plot containing elements of sexual intrigue.

Puckish, smart, witty dialogue.

The most important give-away: length of the movie. This movie is 90 minutes long. I would say that 95 percent or more of Woody’s films are 90 minutes, no more, no less, like this one.

Woody Allen shines in this film. John Turturro wrote his character as a withdrawn, sullen, retiring character, who Allen is trying to motivate into a three-some. Thus, the spotlight is always on Woody Allen, if not because his character has more personality. Allen and John Turturro are like salt and pepper and there is an odd chemistry to their on-screen personas.

All in all, a good, watchable, enjoyable movie.

It takes a lot to keep me interested in a movie or even a series w/o having to take breaks, sometimes taking me a month to even finish an entire movie and up to a year to finish a series, but this movie always keeps me entertained, no matter how many times I watch it.

I'm always desperate for some way to survive and make my bills; and so I tend to love any story where people do desperate things and hatch mad schemes to make ends meet. Also, I liked Woody's acting in this and want to credit the writer of the film for creating it in such a way that I couldn't even tell, till i read the credits later, that it wasn't directed by Woody Allen. An impressive effort for all involved.

It's worth getting this Blu Ray just to enjoy co-star Woody's performance - classic Woody - but if you're not too much into that, then you might want to hold off. The story line seems very unlikely: super-babes Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara are willing to pay John Turturro for his services. Unfortunately, Turturro doesn't really deliver in the clumsy and innocent fashion this role would require. Along the way, he's such a stud and he has such a magic touch that he's able to bring sheltered Jewish widow Vanessa Paradis back into the world of the sensual. Woody does play a very funny pimp, and there are some good lines. I was willing to suspend my disbelief, but the story never really comes together, especially regarding Liev Schreiber's role as some kind of overly possessive orthodox neighborhood watch boy scout. The scene where Woody is kidnapped by the Jewish mafia and hustled before a tribunal is rather incomprehensible. I was disappointed that Turturro didn't spend a bit more time getting the script ironed out before rushing out to shoot this thing.

It is appropriate that Turturro used Woody Allen to co-star in Fading Gigolo because the sensibility of the film seems related to Allen's best work. They both love New York, the women of New York and the richness of customs there. Turturro's Script is filled with longing and self-imposed restraint in perfect tension. This film puts John Turturro on the level of Woody Allen, Mike Nichols and John Cassavetes. Not for all tastes though. This script in woody's style would have been a women's movie, Turturro doesn't fall either way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful little film that sadly nobody saw but you can on disc.

I first saw this film at the movies before lockdown. It's too bad a lot of people did not see it. Then again, I love film so intensely, those of us who have seen it I guess belong to a special club of sorts.
It has Woody Allen and it has the cadence of an Allen film but it was written AND directed by veteran actor John Turturro, who outdoes himself here. A very deceptively simple plotline that is filled with much nuance and even if the sort of lurid title puts you off, don't let it. Sharon Stone is wonderful in that as well.
It delves deep into this man's soul who realizes that love.....that's as far as I will go. Yes it's offbeat but it's also very charming. Also a wonderful performance by Vanessa Paradis., especially impressive.
And if that weren't enough, it has a wonderful jazzy score. I love this movie.
