About the Author

From an early age, Trisha Wolfe dreamed up fantasy worlds and characters and was accused of talking to herself. Today, she lives in South Carolina with her family and writes full time, using her fantasy worlds as an excuse to continue talking to herself.

This book begins and ends with carrot cake. I love that.

This is the second book in this series that I've read (They can all be read stand alone) and I've noticed something important about the way this author writes New Adult books. Her books always deal with strong issues. These are the hard things that new adults face and are so much more than sexy times between college classes. I love that about these books. They feel so much more real to me.

Both Ryder and Ari have issues. Their lives aren't their own. They have let others take it over and both are unhappy at heart. And seeing each other and getting to know each other didn't fix everything. They didn't fall into each others arms and yell, "FINALLY"! No they argued and resisted. Both are used to keeping others away. And that tension between them was so fun. I laughed and gasped a few times as they tried to push and pull at each other. They seriously take that fighting as foreplay thing to a whole new level.

I loved some of the secondary characters and really disliked others, on purpose I'm sure. Vee is one of my favorites. She's desperately in love with Gavin and willing to do anything to get his attention. Her desire to have that leads to some situations. Love both of them and hope to see them again.

So not a fan of Ryder's brother and Ari's parents. They're the string pullers and I wanted to slap them. But it wasn't me who needed to. I was so happy to see the growth that both Ryder and Ari went through to take control of their own lives. I was so proud of both of them.

Carrot cake aside, this book has a way of dealing with each secret and problem along the way carefully.

New adult books are famous for being full of angst. This author kicks that up a notch in this series by touching on the subjects of psychosis, drug addiction and in the case of this book anxiety and eating disorders. As all of those things are real issues in today world it makes the stories she writes seem more real and at times close to home depending on your life experiences.

Arian Wyndemere suffers from an anxiety disorder which feeds her eating disorder. I don’t know if many people know but an eating disorder is treated just like a chemical or alcohol dependency. In some ways it worse, because there is no detox from an eating disorder. They cant just get it out of their system. But it is alike in psychological ways. To get over any addition there is a lot of counseling that needs to be done and its not just something that is cured. That need will always be with them. Maybe not at the forefront of their thoughts later after therapy, but it will always be a little voice in their head when stressful situation or triggers happen.

There of course is a story to the book and it was one I enjoyed but now after reading all 3 books in this series after I am done it is always the issue that is dealt with in that book that lingers on my mind. If you like NA with a dose of realism from the issues they deal with then give this author and series and a try.

Love this series (each book can be read alone) These stories not only have romance but tackle tough important issues. Neither one over shadows the other or weighs the story down. The characters are enjoyable while breaking your heart. I look forward to reading more from Trisha Wolfe!

Was so excited when I got the ARC email because I adore Trisha, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first two companion novels of the Living Heartwood series.

My heart went out to Arian. She has low self esteem but feels such pressure from her parents to look, act and portray herself in a certain way. Her depression and eating disorders stem from this, and it is a cycle for her, do well, feel the stress, pressure and anxiety-- purge and feel the calm and control and energy. I think that she was really well crafted and from someone who's suffered some with eating disorders and especially realizing more and more the link to anxiety, she was realistic.

I always enjoy the dual perspective and this was no exception. Ryder has some of his own issues of course, and when he sees Arian he is reminded of Alyssa, and it throws him off balance. And dang at the banter. So full of tension and they both gave it out. Hard. There was the under current of pain. Something about the other besides the obvious chemistry and physical tension triggered a defense and a loss of a filter when they are interacting.

Ryder's past was rough but he has come so far to overcome it. He is still dealing with a sick mom and the issues with his brother and the guilt and other feelings attached to Alyssa. His backstory was well done, but I appreciated the place of strength that he was at, because even though he had some things to work out and realize for himself, he needed to be strong for Ari, and to realize when she needed a bit of space and the converse when she needed someone more than she would ever admit.

I really enjoyed how some of the previous characters were worked into this one and it was natural.
