STAR COMPASS (novel)

Tara Maya has lived in Africa, Europe and Asia. She's pounded sorghum with mortar and pestle in a little clay village where the jungle meets the desert, meditated in a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and sailed the Volga river to a secret city that was once the heart of the Soviet space program. This first-hand experience, as well as research into the strange and piquant histories of lost civilizations, inspires her writing. Her terrible housekeeping, however, is entirely the fault of pixies.

On the whole, I thought the set was okay. Some of the books significantly better than the others, although that's probably par for the course with a bundle like this, but the ones that were bad were really, really bad.
Brief thoughts on the 6 books:
- Feyland: The Dark Realm by Anthea Sharp (2 stars)
I liked the premise of the story, which was an interesting blend of science fiction and traditional fairy tale (traditional in the ballad sense, rather than the Andrew Lang sense). However, I found the execution far too obvious. The 2 main characters were practically stereotypes: Tam Linn is the typical boy from the wrong side of the tracks with a chip on his shoulder but a heart of gold; Jennet is the spoiled rich girl whose selfishness lands her in trouble, but who finds her inner decency and strength. And of course there's a romance. Also, the story is structured quite closely to the Ballad of Tam Lin. If you are familiar with it, the climax and ending will be entirely predictable.
- The Unfinished Song by Tara Maya (4 stars)
Good world building and interesting magic structure, although parts of the story seemed a bit gritty for a YA novel (there's genocide in the first chapter and several references to sexual assault. The last one in particular was quite disturbing). The main character Dindi was sweetly earnest with a touch of rebellion to keep her from being too cloying. The end left me wanting to know more about her fate, which to me is a mark of a good story.
- The Changelings by Elle Casey (4 stars)
I think this was my favourite of the six. Jayne is hilarious, tough girl persona and all, and she's saved from total obnoxiousness by her rather sweet relationship with her best friend Tony, which is one of the strongest elements of the novel. Highly entertaining.
- Fairy Metal Thunder by J.L. Bryan (1 star)
This was an incredibly boring story. All the characters lacked dimension, except for Jason the main character, whose standout features was his sheer selfishness and total lack of common sense. Who steals a bunch of magical fairy instruments, ignores all warnings of dire consequences and then uses them to brainwash his parents into letting him play in a band?
- Faelorehn by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson (1 star)
I have issues with female protagonists who are totally useless and have to rely on a man to save them throughout the story. The writing was okay, but Meghan had as much personality as a limp dishrag.
- Ever Shade by Alexia Purdy (0 stars)
I hated this from start to end. I think I only managed to finish it just out of morbid curiosity over how much worse it could get. The writing was terrible and the main character spends almost the entire time whining, checking her phone or being perversely attracted to yet another fey male she's met. She never seems to gain any kind of maturity or self knowledge during her journey either. Just. Awful.
(keep in mind these are all just the first book of a series)
THE UNFINISHED SONG (Book One): INITIATE - TARA MAYA
This was a little slow to start but picked up and hooked me just before the end of the first book. I've now read 6 of the 12 and am cursing myself for getting sucked into a series that will not be finished in the near future. Especially with the price vs the length of the books I hate to keep buying... but there's no way I could stop now. Truly addicting!
WAR OF THE FAE: BOOK 1 (THE CHANGELINGS) - ELLE CASEY
Again this one hooked me just before the end of the first book and I read all 7 one after another. They just get better as you go along. I loved almost every minute up until what felt to me like a rushed (albeit happy) ending. Still one of my favorites.
FAELOREHN - JENNA ELIZABETH JOHNSON
DIdn't warm up to this one as quick but it I did end up reading the entire series and don't regret it. It has a wonderful feel good ending and just for that I'll be looking for more of her books.
EVER SHADE (A DARK FAERIE TALE #1) - ALEXIA PURDY
I liked this book enough to buy the omnibus but I have to say I won't be continuing in the series. As I got to the 3rd book the events became choppy and don't seem to flow together very well. The relationships (for me at least) have become unrealistic and confusing. There are many inconsistencies which is a personal pet peeve.
FEYLAND: THE DARK REALM - ANTHEA SHARP
This one was ok... I didn't get into it enough to continue the series but I may yet someday.
FAIRY METAL THUNDER - JL BRYAN
Although I promised myself I'd read each of these to the end... I just couldn't with this one. I tried skimming for a while hoping to move along to something that would keep my attention but it just didn't do it for me.
Overall it was great to try all these series out... I was able to stop my progress and follow a series to the end (when I chose to) and as soon as I was done I had a new book already waiting for me. Definitely, worth the 99 cents.
Most of them, however, did exactly as they were intended and prompted me to purchase their sequels.
The Unfinished Song captivated me enough, caught my sympathy enough, that I purchased the next two books.
War of the Fae: The Changelings was verrrrry good. The characters were likable and believable. The premise was enough that I wanted to continue reading even though some parts were a little thin.
Fairy Metal Thunder.... Is it possible to really just want the main character to be caught and punished? That's how I felt.
Feyland: The Dark Realm was a great read about a teenage girl, a computer game, and a teenage boy..... The names made the story seem predictable, though.
Ever Shade..... I just couldn't..... The writing in this was so incredibly bad. I wanted to take out a red pen every time I started reading. I wanted to sit down and have a conference with the writer the way I would with a student about their work. There was something about the author's style that completely turned me off from the story. I even skipped around, trying to just jump in in the middle, give myself to shoot for when I would start over...... When I found myself consistently choosing to read other books, I gave up. This was just not the story for me.
Overall, 5 out 6 isn't bad at all and I'm waiting to follow up on some of the other sequels!

The first book, Feyland, tells the story of a girl who lost her human essence to the Dark Faerie Queen and took the help of a poor but amazing gamer to regain it.
The Unfinished Song tells us about Dindi, who wanted to become a Tavaedi and helped others to become it, but lost in her own chalenges.
War of the Fae is the story of a typical badgirl named Jayne Sparks who took up an adventure with her nerdy friend Tony Green in the mystical Green Forest.
Fairy Metal Thunder is an adrenaline rush through the life of a failing band whose guitarist steals four instruments from the faerie realm which led to both their upliftment and their falling into danger.
Faelorehn tells us the story of a half Faerie girl who falls in love with a guy who guides him into the Faerie Realm.
Ever Shade tells us the story of a normal girl who is dragged into the Faerie World and forced to fall in love with Teleen men.
