Sixteen-year-old Ephraim Scott is horrified when he comes home from school and finds his mother unconscious at the kitchen table, clutching a bottle of pills. The reason for her suicide attempt is even more disturbing: she thought she'd identified Ephraim's body at the hospital that day.
Among his dead double's belongings, Ephraim finds a strange coin--a coin that grants wishes when he flips it. With a flick of his thumb, he can turn his alcoholic mother into a model parent and catch the eye of the girl he's liked since second grade. But the coin doesn't always change things for the better. And a bad flip can destroy other people's lives as easily as it rebuilds his own.
The coin could give Ephraim everything he's ever wanted--if he learns to control its power before his luck runs out.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Warning: This Book is Pure Awesome Crack. Tired of cookie-cutter young-adult novels? . . . [Fair Coin] achieves the feat of seeming like a dark fairy tale and a clever science fiction epic rolled into one. It's a fast-moving book full of twists and cool character moments and is definitely ideal for adults who miss the days of engaging, idea-driven science fiction."
-io9
"Funny, flirtatious, and unexpectedly poignant, Fair Coin takes the phrase 'be careful what you wish for' and runs with it. A stand-out debut from an author to watch."
-LAUREN MCLAUGHLIN, author of Scored
"[A] well-written, fast-paced, EPIC adventure. There are plot twists you will never see coming and enough science fiction elements to satisfy even the hungriest nerd brain! In my opinion, it accurately portrays . . . what teenagers would do if they had the entire universe at their disposal."
-MOTHER/GAMER/WRITER
"I thoroughly loved this book. Rather than finding just another same-old, same-old book, this one smashed through the mold. . . . I highly recommend [Fair Coin] to all fans of YA, especially those who enjoy male MCs, science fiction, and fantasy."
-I SWIM FOR OCEANS
"This one reminded me a lot of Scott Westerfeld's The Uglies. There's so much to love here: madcap adventure, chewy theoretical physics, realistic angst, serious stakes leavened by hilarious snark. The kind of book smart kids will love."
-N. K. JEMISIN, author of the Inheritance Trilogy
"A refreshingly unique read. . . . I loved the characters, I loved the concept, and most of all, I loved how immersed I was in the story."
-HOPELESSLY DEVOTED BIBLIOPHILE
"Myers has written a novel that makes the reader think. . . . It is humorous, emotional, and complex in a refreshing way, and I think it's a book that anyone who enjoys science fiction could really love."
-LITERARY OBSESSION
"Cerebral science fiction with enough romance and two-fisted action to keep it from getting too bogged down in its own ideas. A great read for just about anyone."

And this book ain't Harry Potter. This is a well-crafted story whose protagonist appears to have been given the gift of infinite wishes. Everything is ot as it seems, as the saying goes, since he's really been kidnapped by aliens & placed into a virtual reality simulation... I kid, I kid. I just didn't really wanna give everything away.
While not the main thrust of the story, there is a plotline that deals with a love interest. It's actually a fairly important piece of the puzzle and is the cause for some of the initial wishes. As the wishes all appear to have far-reaching, universe-changing consequences, it might have been funny to have the love interest switch genders at one, point, but that's neither here nor there.
What the author has done is taken a novel idea and run with it; Myers, though at the beginning of his career, shows promise and a real knack for the craft of writing. The characters pop, there are enough twists and unexpected plot turns that it was an enjoyable read. I have read enough that I can often guess what comes next; in the case of "Fair Coin", it was the opposite - I could often not guess what was around the page.
I look forward to enjoying more from Myers; I appreciate that this was written with resolution. It may or may not be the jumping off point for a series, but anyone reading this would be completely satisfied in the end.
I'm not sure why I thought the author was a woman throughout most of the book, but I did, and I was delighted that she was able to do such a good job of portraying male adolescents. Turns out that E.C. Myers is male, so he doesn't get quite as many points for that (!), but regardless of whether the author was writing across gender lines or not, the main characters are all very interesting, believable characters, even if some of them are not (quite naturally, as dictated by the plot) static in themselves as Ephraim goes on his travels.
If you have a young person in your life who enjoys YA SF/F, give this to them. I think they'll have a good time.
It's a young adult book, but I truly believe people of any age would enjoy it. The main protagonist, Ephraim Scott, comes home from school to find his mother unconscious clutching a bottle of pills. It's the reason she's clutching the pills though that's disturbing. Earlier that day, she had identified his body at the hospital. Knowing he was still alive, of course, he decides to investigate his dead double and finds a coin among the double's belongings. When he flips it, it grants wishes, some of which make his life better while others don't. Figuring out what the coin is all about takes up the rest of the book, and it was a rollicking adventure that I couldn't put down.
What I enjoyed most in this book were the realism of the main characters. Ephraim and his friends are all typical teenagers and are solving the mystery along with the reader. I also liked how Myers went from universe to universe portraying the subtle changes in each one well. He builds a complex world that works for the story he is telling, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
After a slow start, things kick into high gear as the true nature of the coin is revealed and our hero finds himself locked in a desperate battle with a psychotic version of his best friend from a parallel universe.
There are only four/five major characters in this book, and they are well drawn and well-rounded. And they need to be, since we will meet several different versions of each of them!
This book was a fast read and well-done and I enjoyed it. My four stars would likely be five stars for most people, as I have no real complaints. There is a sequel, Quantum Coin , and I am eager to dive into it!
I would recommend it for other teens and it make's an appropriate gift (stocking stuffer, birthday gift) for kids his age.

I need to read the next installment!
Myers writes with such vivid imagination.
Recommended!
If you don't give it a shot, then... flip a coin. Maybe another you already did. Lol.
