Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.
With the one-year anniversary of the now-successful Barks & Beans Cafe approaching, siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield set up an iced coffee booth at the state fair. Taking a break from brewing, Macy bumps into Carolina, a long-lost childhood friend who's now sitting pretty as a country superstar. Macy tries not to fangirl too hard when her old friend extends an invitation to meet the rest of the Carolina Crush band before their opening show.
But when Carolina falls victim to not one, but two near-death experiences, Macy takes it upon herself to find out who has it in for her old friend. Fortified with plenty of roasted corn, cinnamon rolls, and her brother's signature iced maple latte, Macy takes to the Ferris wheel to get the lay of the land from the air. She discovers too late that this year's fair isn't all fun and games...but she's already locked in for the ride.
Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

I loved the cameo of Tess Spencer – that was a fun Easter egg for this reader, since I adore Tess like she’s my personal bestie. The rambunctious shelter dog, Waffles, is back in this story as well, causing chaos wherever she goes. I appreciate the continuity that appears throughout these stories – relationships grow and develop over time, and Gilbert can take her time to do so because they can be spread out versus jam packed into one book. There are several relationships that I’m eager to see how they play out, especially one that means possible dealings with a villain. I wouldn’t argue against a bit more Titan McCoy either! Alas, I guess I'll have to wait until book four to find out what our protagonists get into next!
"I couldn't shake the feeling . . . . "
Discovering a childhood friend among the crowd at the West Virginia State Fair seemed coincidental at best, since this particular friend of Macy Hatfield was a nationally known country music star. As the two reminisce, they make plans to meet again over dinner . . . . only the after dinner plans turn deadly for Macy's friend, the famed Carolina Garten.
In true Hatfield fashion, Macy turns over every leaf and rounds every corner trying to determine who had motive to nearly kill Carolina. Actually, it seems like a lot of people did. But it's what Macy views from above the fairgrounds aboard a Ferris wheel that sends her down a completely different path. . . . . .and what she eventually discovers is quite shocking.
Another delightful cozy mystery featuring the famed Hatfield siblings, Macy's big dog Coal, and a host of other neighbors and friends.
There are so many twists and turns that the revealing of "whodunit" was quite a surprise !
A new neighbor was introduced who is one I look forward to learning more about in the 4th book of this series "Spilled Milk " which will be available April 19, 2021
Reading one of Heather Gilbert’s cozy mysteries is like visiting an old friend. The story lines are fresh. And the characters stay with you long after the story ends.
Treat yourself this Christmas to a great novel and visit siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield at the Barks and Beans Cafe in Fair Trade.
