Iced Over is another quick and fun installment to the Barks & Beans Cafe series! I adore Macy and Bo and love the small-town feel of these books. While I do love the café setting of the previous books, it is fun to go to the fair with Macy, Bo, and their staff to sell iced coffee to fair-goers. Macy reconnects with an old friend, Carolina, who now fronts a country music band that is enjoying significant popularity. However, Carolina also seems to be the target of two attempts on her life, and Macy can’t help but be compelled to help her old friend.

I loved the cameo of Tess Spencer – that was a fun Easter egg for this reader, since I adore Tess like she’s my personal bestie. The rambunctious shelter dog, Waffles, is back in this story as well, causing chaos wherever she goes. I appreciate the continuity that appears throughout these stories – relationships grow and develop over time, and Gilbert can take her time to do so because they can be spread out versus jam packed into one book. There are several relationships that I’m eager to see how they play out, especially one that means possible dealings with a villain. I wouldn’t argue against a bit more Titan McCoy either! Alas, I guess I'll have to wait until book four to find out what our protagonists get into next!

Discovering a childhood friend among the crowd at the West Virginia State Fair seemed coincidental at best, since this particular friend of Macy Hatfield was a nationally known country music star. As the two reminisce, they make plans to meet again over dinner . . . . only the after dinner plans turn deadly for Macy's friend, the famed Carolina Garten.

In true Hatfield fashion, Macy turns over every leaf and rounds every corner trying to determine who had motive to nearly kill Carolina. Actually, it seems like a lot of people did. But it's what Macy views from above the fairgrounds aboard a Ferris wheel that sends her down a completely different path. . . . . .and what she eventually discovers is quite shocking.

Another delightful cozy mystery featuring the famed Hatfield siblings, Macy's big dog Coal, and a host of other neighbors and friends.

This series, set in my beloved state of WV, is dear to my heart, as fellow WV girl, Heather Gilbert, weaves a tale of a mountain tradition--the WV State Fair--and the endearing loyalty of mountain people. I was touched by Macy's caring, compassion, and loyalty to her friend as the action played out in the quaint town of Lewisburg and in the shadow of the illustrious Greenbriar Hotel. It was good to visit with the Hatfield siblings Macy and Bo again and to get to love on Coal, Great Dane Deluxe, and the schitzy doodle, Waffles. Gilbert did an excellent job of the telling of a heart-felt reunion gone awry through a sinister money-making scheme. I never tire of brother Bo's dual mastering of an espresso machine and a glock--my kind of man! And then there is Titan McCoy... For a sweet, satisfying read, give this one a try!

True to her craft of writing very intriguing mysteries which capture your attention from the first sentence and holding it tightly throughout the entire story until the final sentence Heather Day Gilbert spun this third in the Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery series so very well it was hard to put down.
There are so many twists and turns that the revealing of "whodunit" was quite a surprise !
A new neighbor was introduced who is one I look forward to learning more about in the 4th book of this series "Spilled Milk " which will be available April 19, 2021
