Editorial Reviews

On this, the first release on Frank Fairfield s Tompkins Square imprint, Pawn Records, Fairfield
presents an exciting collection of reissued recordings from his personal 78 rpm record collection.
It provides a broad view of the Gramophone era , specifically concerning the recording of vernacular
music from around the world: from Atlanta, Georgia to Kisumu, Kenya; from the 10 s to the 60 s.
The records have been beautifully transferred by the highly respected record collector and producer
Michael Kieffer.
Frank s self-titled debut album on Tompkins Square has won over fans like Greil Marcus and Ry
Cooder, and landed Frank opening spots for Fleet Foxes and Brendan Benson. Pitchfork recently
ran an extensive interview with Frank in their new column The Out Door, and he s been a staple
on Greg Vandy s show on KEXP, Seattle.

Format: Audio CD
Frank Fairfield is a fantastic singer-songwriter from California whose first two solo releases featured, in addition to his own compositions, his arrangements of traditional American folk, country, and blues tunes from the early-to-mid 20th century. The source of these songs was his (vast) collection of old 78rpm records. Between the two solo releases, his label, Tompkins Square, issued this collection as a private label release (Frank Fairfield's Pawn Records) - it consists of sixteen of Mr. Fairfield's presumably favorite sides from his collection. Based on his solo music, you would understandably expect that this collection would be heavy on early American country or blues recordings, but Mr. Fairfield is revealed to be an ethno-musicologist of a high order - just about every conceivable style of recorded popular music is represented in this collection - it starts with a Scottish bagpipe tune, finishes with a fire-and-brimstone African-American church sermon/faith-healing, and covers a huge amount of musical ground in between - there are songs from Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Indonesia, China, and France, as well as from the U.S. Most or all of the selections are truly amazing, but as good are Frank Fairfield's detailed and obviously knowledgeable and well-researched notes on each track. This is an astounding collection, a must-have if you have a thirst and love for a wide variety of music - here's hoping for further Pawn Records releases!

I did not realize that this CD (probably my mistake not reading the fine print better) is a compilation of old records from Frank's collection that were simply re-recorded. I thought they were old songs he had recorded in his unique way. I have my own collection of old records, and these are not ones I would want to hear a second go round. Just not my cup o' tea.
