Fairy-Struck (The Twilight Court Book 1) Kindle Edition
I met him at the end of my sword.
Not the most romantic of introductions but it suited us. We're both warriors; he's a lord of the Wild Hunt of Fairy, and I'm an extinguisher—a psychic soldier trained from birth to protect our world from his kind. Attraction arced between us like lightning. I saw it in his eyes, watched them shift from frigid silver to molten metal. Despite all of that, I knew it could go nowhere. Fairies killed my mother and her death nearly destroyed my father. Then there's the fact that extinguishers don't date outside our society. A human would be bad enough, but a fairy? That's not just frowned upon, it's forbidden. We cannot be together. It's impossible. And that's fine. I've got bigger things to worry about. Like my new charge: a dryad who just informed us of a fairy plot to exterminate the human race. I'll focus on her and ignore the wild thrumming of my blood every time I look at him. I'm a professional; I can handle one arrogant, annoying, stubborn, dangerously sexy fairy hunter who won't stop staring at me as if I'm already his. I'm not one of his delicate, Fey ladies, longing to swoon into his arms. I carry an iron sword and iron is poison to Fairies. If he gets too close, he'll be the one swooning.

“It's all right.” I sighed. “I feel the same way.” And I did. My body was tense, as angry with me as he was; thrumming with need for a man we could never have. So stupid.
“Then why are you denying us this?” Tiernan looked over at me; his eyes wide with confusion. “A fairy would never ignore an attraction so strong. Pleasure should be taken wherever it can be found; especially for those of us who rarely find it.”
“Oh, please.” I rolled my eyes. “Don't you dare try to imply that you don't get laid all the time.”
“Ah.” He gave a grim laugh. “There's that crudeness I was referring to.”
“As if fairies aren't crude.” I lifted a brow at him.
“Not the sidhe”—he shook his head—“and I wouldn't couple with a lesser fey.”
“Well, there you go. I'm obviously not the girl for you.” I glanced away; unsure why his criticism of my behavior should hit me so hard.
“Stop doing that!” Tiernan grabbed my upper arm and gave it a little shake. “This is not going away; no matter what you say. And no, by the way, I don't get laid all the time.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” I looked him over. “Not only are you gorgeous, you're a freaking Lord of the Wild Hunt; as you keep reminding me. That alone should drop some panties.”
He just sat there and gaped at me. Did he really not know how hot he was? I'd seen enough fairies to know that even among their stunning throng, this guy was something noteworthy. His humble, shocked expression had to be pretense... and it probably worked on a lot of women. God damned fairies; they were good at getting what they wanted.
“Stop looking at me like that,” I finally growled. “I'm not going to fall for your Eeyore routine.”
“My what?” He went from shocked to baffled.
“You know,” I said. “Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh; Thanks for noticing me.”
“I have no idea what you're talking about, but this person sounds pathetic, and I assure you; I am not that,” he said stiffly.
“No,” I said and laughed, “you're definitely not pathetic. Which leads me back to my point. You'll have no trouble finding another lover. So, why don't you go and do that, as will I, and we can both forget this ever happened?”
“There will be no forgetting.” Tiernan started up the car angrily. “This is far from over, Seren, but I refuse to sit here arguing with you about it on a public street where we could both potentially become targets.”
“I am not a target,” I groaned as he pulled out into traffic. “No one is trying to kill me.”
That was when the first wave of magic hit.

Chapter one begins with her character, Seren Sloane explaining a few theories surrounding the origin of these mystical creatures like himself, called the “Fey”. If like me, you are unfamiliar with the term “Frey” Seren’s explanation will helps. “No one knows the true origins of the fey, I don't think even the fey themselves remember, but theories abound. One has them evolving alongside us but where we advanced in groups, banding together to become stronger, the fey morphed out of those outcast predators who were too wild for a pack. Those who don't believe in evolution, think instead that the fey issue from divine creations, angels fallen from God's grace. Yet another tale insists they were gods themselves, or demi-gods, led by a mother goddess named Danu.”
I never thought about hunting fairies before, but if you need to then using an expert called an “Extinguisher” is the key. I also didn’t know that “all magic leaves traces of energy and when combined with the powerful aura of a fairy, the resulting glow reaches up and around its host like the Northern Lights.”
Here is a quote that might draw you into the story: “We made camp for the night in a little clearing. A massive purple and silver tent was erected for me to sleep in, despite my protests. A fairy princess doesn't sleep on a mat alongside her knights. It seemed like a waste of time and effort to me but they actually got it up pretty quickly and mine wasn't the only tent they pitched. There was a communal tent for the knights. I guess being closely attuned to nature didn't equate to wanting to sleep in her loving arms.
It was around dusk that a shivering coolness coasted over me and had me running from my tent. I had just changed into a new set of leather pants, which I'd chosen to wear along with short tunics for the journey. Thankfully, no one expected me to parade around in fancy dresses through the forest like some Tolkien elf. The belt I'd been fastening over my tunic, fell away as I rushed to the middle of our camp.
My skin was prickling and there were fluttering sensations at the edge of my consciousness, like something was trying to get my attention. My heart raced as I peered through the thick growth of trees and shrubs crowding around the perimeter of the clearing. Something was approaching, I could feel it coming at me from all directions.”
Well-developed characters, good story telling, adventure, conversation, and a touch of romance kept me interested. If you enjoy fantasy and mythical creatures, you will love “Fairy Struck” which is the first book in this “Twilight Court” series.

Fairy-Struck (The Twilight Court Book 1)
Seren has compassion and the means to make things happen. She wants a better world, everyone treated fairly, yet there are those against her, wanting to kill her. Nothing new there. Her extinguisher job wasn't without risk, too. But now she has the ear and voice of Danu, the Goddess of Fairy. Of anything, her always knowing what to do, to get it right on the first try, I wondered why she wasn't held accountable for her rampage alongside her father and those they 'took out.' She is a killer. Yet now she's on her way to being a perfect little princess. It's written like a fairytale, leaning towards young adult yet there's sex scenes and talk of torture and rape. - Dan's Wife
Although this is a reverse harem, the love scenes are not what you usually anticipate. So if you are hoping for some descriptive fantasy, you will be disappointed. However, if you are looking for love scenes that leave you to your imagination, you will, for the most part, be happy. There is more to the series than the love scenes. The love scenes just add spice and are not the entirety of the series.
I loved the characters, the unique twist in the fae world with a new kingdom (twilight) instead of just the seelie and unseelie. The world the author built has so many options to explore and expand. There will be several times in the next couple of installments where you will want to smack the author upside the head because of having Seren in a reverse harem, giving characters personality changes and so forth. However, if you hold on and continue the series, you will see that there is a reason for the authors madness. So keep reading, if you are like me, by the end of the series though will have enjoyed the ride and will be sad to say goodbye to the characters.
