Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this favorable look at the politics and faith of the nation's current president, Mansfield, who has penned several historical biographies with faith emphases, examines Bush's spiritual journey and discusses how it shapes his administration. Although he writes that Bush's faith has waxed and waned over the years, Bush "is among a small number of American presidents to have undergone a profound religious transformation as an adult... he came to the presidency, then, with the zeal of the newly converted." To understand the president's brand of faith, Mansfield traces his family legacy, his boyhood in Midland, Tex., his playboy years and his lifelong love affair with baseball. Bush's marriage to Laura helped stabilize him spiritually, and Mansfield details later encounters with evangelists Arthur Blessit and Billy Graham that he believes were pivotal in Bush's spiritual formation. He also shows the role of Bush's Christianity in running for various offices, implementing faith-based initiatives and responding to 9/11 and war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Throughout the book, Mansfield offers his own interpretations about events in writing that is often rich and specific in detail. Noticeably absent is commentary on Bush's controversial environmental policies and how his faith has-or has not-informed them. But Mansfield is correct when he writes that "whatever else the presidency of George W. Bush imprints on American history, it will at the least have granted the nation an opportunity to rethink the role of religion in its public life."

About the Author

Stephen Mansfield grew up largely in Europe as the son of a U.S. Army officer, an experience that afforded him an early love of history and international affairs. After becoming a Christian at the age of eighteen, Stephen attended a university where biblical faith and intellectual pursuits were merged. This integration of faith and thought shaped him profoundly, and he went on over the next several decades to earn two master’s degrees and a doctorate in the fields of history, philosophy and literature. Stephen’s life message is the idea of destiny, the certainty that God has made all things, including men and nations, with a purpose. All of his writing, his teaching, his work in the nations-and more recently, his focus on calling the United States to a reclaiming of its purpose-is centered around this much-neglected theme. Stephen is currently working on a variety of writing projects, including several biographies of great contemporary leaders. Stephen is the author of numerous books in history and leadership, including Never Give In: The extraordinary Character of Winston Churchill and Then Darkness Fled: The Liberating Wisdom of Booker T. Washington, and recently, the New York Times bestseller The Faith of George W. Bush.

George W Bush may be one of the most misunderstood presidents in history, and certainly of our time. This book allowed me to understand the motives behind his decisions, and to understand the heart of a president serving at a critical juncture in America's life. I appreciate Mansfield's ability to articulate the path that the president has taken in his life, and to do it in a factual, balanced, and unbiased manner. Refreshing and insightful!

It seems there are a miriad of books that communicate either a passion or a dislike for President Bush. Finally, someone has written a book that walks the middle ground. Dr. Mansfield tells some wonderful, previously unheard stories of President Bush's path to salvation and personal clarity of purpose, as well as the human frailties that shaped his earlier years. What Dr. Mansfield paints is a picture of a man who truly believes in a divine purpose about his life, but a man who seriously seeks God's will with a humble and sincere heart. Very well written and inspirational!

This is a facinating look into the heart and soul of President George W Bush. Mansfield does not gloss over Bush's weaknesses or failures, but neither does he use those weaknesses to attack and villify Bush. Rather, he presents the facts as he found them, and leaves us with a portrait of a man with the human weaknesses we all share, but a man who found the faith to overcome and rise above his fallen human condition.
We see in George W Bush a man who has the total confidence of one who understands his purpose and who has total faith in his God, but who, at the same time, humbles himself before that God, knowing that all can and will be lost if he succumbs to the temptation of pride and forgets that he is only where he is by the grace of God.
This is a book that needed to be written, and should be read by all who truly want to understand what motivates this 43rd President of the United States.

I just finished reading this book and found it fascinating. No matter which end of the political spectrum a reader might be on, this book will be very informative. The author has attempted to cast a light on WHAT George Bush believes and HOW that influences his thought process and actions. The author's task was difficult, but my impression is that he has succeeded in providing a neutral insight to the President. I say neutral as opposed to balanced, because he is neither excessively critical or complimentary. George Bush's failures and successes are detailed for the reader - his critics will find sufficient ammunition for their purposes and his supporters will find the book enlightening of his motives.
What is most fascinating in the book is to see how George Bush's beliefs have affected his leadership development and style. The information about the Bush family history provides insight into the Bush family structure and belief systems and what motivates them in general, and George W. Bush in particular.
I came away from reading the book with some lessons in leadership, spirituality and courage. I think that one can learn from every person who has achieved something, no matter whether I agree with their politics or religion. I highly recommend the book to all with an open mind.

With all of the negative books about George W. Bush in the market, it is about time that someone has the courage to write an unbiased book about our president and his faith. As an Christian independent with conservative leanings, it has helped me see how the president's policies have been influenced by his relationship with God. And as someone whose past has not always followed God's path, I can relate to the president's sometimes checkered past. The engaging, narrative writing style is easy to read.
I let my father-in-law, a long-time labor Democrat read the book, and he said he had gained a newfound respect for the president. I hope the same will be said for other Christians who read this book with an open mind.

I LOVED this book. Although a big fan of GW, I wasn't that familiar with his background. This book doesn't just explain President Bush's philosophy on religion, this book explains the man. Now I am even a bigger fan...

Are you working 100+ hours a week? Feeling like something is missing in your life? No matter how hard you try or how much success you attain, you just don't feel complete. This book may be the beginning of your cure; if you are ready to hear its message and take it to heart.
The book is a quick read which examines the religious histories of both the USA and the Bush family. From these contexts Mansfield reveals George W. Bush's spriritual awakening which occured late in his adult life and how this awakening has made him whole. As a spiritual biography of sorts, The Faith of George W. Bush illustrates that in his search for self fulfillment, Bush has found the answer which few seem to discover and fewer actually act on. What answer is that? Getting into heaven is more important than getting into Forbes.
Also, we all have a soul which plays a much greater role in our big picture and sometimes due to the hectic pace we all lead; we neglect it to our overall detriment. Best Wishes.
