I waited a few days to start reading this book after I got it because even though I have read several of Greg Garrett's books in the past, I've been feeling burned out on politics lately and wasn't sure I would enjoy this. In the introduction Dr. Garrett, a self-identified Democrat, lovingly and effectively changed my opinion about Ken Starr. I knew then that this book wouldn't just preach to a liberal/progressive Christian choir, but would actually challenge me toward personal growth. I found the chapter on taxes, rights, and responsibilities especially helpful.

As usual, I found Dr. Garrett's style clear and conversational without sacrificing substance.

I purchased this book hoping for a politically unbiased read on faithful citizenship. Too many times the author noted his own biases for one party over another and soon it became quite evident that this would be interwoven in the entire book. The book has good points in marking love of neighbor of prime importance. I probably would have liked the book if I was of the same political persuasion as the author. Instead, I had to put the book down before I could finish it. Love for neighbor did not follow though to those who want the same outcome from a different direction.

I was reminded at Dr. Garrett's book signing last night that Jesus often challenged his listeners by not answering the question he was asked. He answered the questions they should have been asking. This book encourages us to reexamine the questions we are asking of ourselves when it comes to our political selves and structures. What kinds of questions should we be asking? And once we ask those hard questions how, then, should we respond? Do we increase our love of God and our neighbor by what we proclaim or enact?

Faithful Citizenship is much overdue. In an easy-to-read, generous-hearted style, Garrett presents an unassailable case that neither Scripture nor tradition justify what is too often described as "Christian" politics in public discourse. His thesis is that, for Americans, faith and politics are too easily interchangeable, and that we tend to baptize our political leanings and call them Christian. Instead, he gives us a readable overview of what Christianity has taught over the centuries about the relationship of faith and politics. Garrett, a self-acknowledged democrat, shares his own stories of discovering Christ in his presumed political enemies with humility and humor, modeling the behavior he feels needs to mark our political discourse. The book is ideal for discussion groups or Sunday school classes. Each chapter ends with discussion questions. I am concerned about the fact that the book is exclusively electronic. That may undermine its obvious goal of being easily accessible for church groups and classes. Still, I applaud his attempt to keep up with our rapidly changing times, and I can't complain about the price!

What I love about Greg's work is that he is not afraid to call all sides on the carpet for the ways in which they seek to live out the kingdom of this world or the kingdom of God. He is able to rise above his own specific beliefs about politics to see what is really at stake...people's lives. Thanks for this thoughtful, challenging work!
