About the Author

Author of action packed novels and short stories, Basil's stories have been called "Pulse Pounding" and "Breathtaking". Give them a read and judge for yourself. Basil does not just write stories, but has lived a lot of what they contain. The backdrop for his writing started with his birth in rural interior Alaska and his school years among the Ohio cornfields where he wished to be anywhere else as long as it was exciting. He has lived in Alaska, San Diego, DC, Baltimore, and Ohio. He tried a career in the Marines. After injuries sent him home early he worked at the NSA, owned a computer shop, was a carpenter, farmer, actor, lumberjack, voice actor, EMT, network admin, helpdesk supervisor, Boy Scout leader, IT trainer, radio talk host, youth minister, and was a sergeant in the Alaska Defense Force Coastal Scouts. Until a ski injury in 2008 he had been an avid weight lifter and could bench press 420 lbs. Now he's limited to a bit on the eliptical machine each day and hefting his laptop and an occasional pint of Guinness. He lives in Anchorage Alaska with his wife and sons

I tend to like this kind of story, but as I have mentioned previously, I have to believe that the events being depicted are at least remotely possible.

This one is full of one unbelievable thing after another. Just a brief synopsis.

A Marine goes into the reserves and becomes a pastor while as a side job he stays in the reserves and is called up to go out and operate as an assassin during his 2 days a month and 2 weeks a year training time. Really?

The basic goofy premise ought to tell you how believable the story is. But just so you get a gist of how far out there it is the pastor's wife and family is murdered by a gang member who coincidentally is somehow connected with a terrorist who tortured him a number of years ago.

It is fiction so I can deal with a few things that are way out there, but a continuous dose of them gets a book one star from me and I quit reading it. That is what happened to this book.

As tends to be the case with self published authors, there are several highly suspicious 5 star reviews, but there are also a number of what appear to be legit 4 and 5 star reviews for the book.

I got this one and another book by the same author 65 Below for free. I went to the trouble to download them based on the good reviews both had, and the premise of both books that had a lot of potential.

I know some very mediocre authors have a fair number of legitimate fans that like their stuff, but I am just not a fan of this author. Maybe they are just good at promoting the book to a crowd that likes their style of book. I don't know. Neither book did anything for me.

I really enjoyed this story. I won't bother telling what the story is about since it's already covered in the other reviews and in the book's description. I will say that the action is very riveting and intense and the good characters are very likeable. It's a nice change to read a book that is not full of vulgar language and sexual activity, but is still full of action, danger, and adventure.

My only problem with the book is the abundance of misspellings throughout; especially in the beginning. The middle of the book has much fewer errors for some reason, but then there are a few obvious errors in the last part. I wonder if it's just the way Kindle books are digitized. I would love to be a Kindle book proofreader.

Overall, I would definitely seek out more books written by Basil Sands.

Reverend Mike Farris' congregation had no idea that their pastor used to be a Special Ops Marine. He had given all of that up when he married his wife, Janelle, and their son 'Mini-Mike' came along. When his street ministry encroaches on the territory of local gang leader, Cold Bones, Farris' wife, son and two close friends are gunned down in his front yard. With the help of some old, and new, military buddies, Mike hunts down Cold Bones and finds he is doing business with a terrorist named Usein. The reader is taken on a fast paced ride as Farris' and his buddies/colleagues race against time to foil a terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear bomb in Ohio.

I'm not a fan of military or espionage stories at all, but I would recommend this book to any grown-up who wants a good edge-of-your-seat thriller.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review.

This book tended to keep me on my toes with the living in the past and suddenly being thrust back to the present and none of the action being easy on the heroes. I love when stuff comes together like it did and could identify with the main characters even though my life is certainly nothing like theirs. All too believable incidences .... Just about wore me out!

Mike Farris, retired Marine Major, special ops assassin, tall, dark, and handsome...wow...and he's a pastor, too, with his own congregation, loving wife, and 2 year old son. He loses it all when terrorists target him, killing his family instead. Pastor Mike teams up with retired Marine Gunny Paul Hogan, now working for the FBI to locate terrorists planning to set off a nuclear explosion. Their investigation ties in to the death of his wife and son. There are flashbacks that tell Mike's story, that makes his character believeable.

Great story line. I thought Basil did a great job explaining Mike's theology (specifically how he reconciles his military job to his pastoral one). The story was great and I was impressed with how Mike handled what he faced. The flashbacks to earlier times really helped explain Mike's character. I would enjoy reading more about Mike and what happens to him after the events in this great story.

I have read the book a couple of times and it's a good read. Being from the same area, the author got the geography right and, ironically, got the theology pretty much bang on. What is the major detractor is the grammatical gaffes that run rampant in every chapter and, at times, on every page.

I am probably going to try one more book by this author and if the same situation occurs, the reefer door is gonna close and the light is turning off

Can one serve God through sniper duty in the Marines? As one who grew up during the Vietnam era, I frequently heard a loud "No!" from many to whom "Faithful Warrior" would be an oxymoron. But as Basil Sands shows us, the two are not at all contradictory. One can be a warrior, difficult as it is, and thoroughly faithful to one's God and commanding officers. (Even John the Baptizer, the greatest prophet of Israel according to Jesus, didn't tell Roman soldiers to resign, but rather to be content with their wages and not abuse their power.)

The story of Pastor Mike and his unwilling turn to an urban military mission is well told and entertaining. It was my introduction to Basil Sands's work, and I've enjoyed others of his books as well. Like Tom Clancy and Donald Bellisario before him, he brings out those qualities that show the military as deserving of respect. More power to him.
