The gods are at war and only a farmer’s daughter can save the world from Armageddon.

"Faizah's Destiny: The Tales of Abu Nuwas 2" was previously published as "Quest for the Simurgh" and "Faizah's Destiny." This final edition adds the frame story of Abu Nuwas the storyteller. The frame technique was used in 1001 Arabian Nights to provide a context to a series of short stories which originated over centuries in many cultures. At some point, somebody decided to make it a cohesive story with the addition of Scheherazade telling her own tale of keeping her murderous prince from killing her by leaving him hanging each night in the midst of a tale. A companion book, "Setara's Genie: The Tales of Abu Nuwas" uses the same technique. The story teller is the same, but the frame story differs depending on Abu's audience.

Excellent tale for young and old

I liked the first book of Tales a lot, but this second book topped it. The story is intriguing and delightful. It had depth of meaning and lessons on values woven simply into the story and characters, yet it is the story itself that is primary. The descriptions of characters, scenery, and action were very rich. The action never lags; it kept me interested. I felt pleasure and enrichment in reading this story.

An Enjoyable Read for Children

Faizah's Destiny is a tale set in a fictional Middle East that follows the adventures of four village children as they undergo a process of growing up and learning about themselves. It draws on Persian and other Middle Eastern myths for its fantasy elements, including a set of gods and demons and the great mythical bird the Simurgh (equivalent to the Roc, Ziz, or Phenix in related mythologies). (I found the Simurgh a bit of an anticlimax, however - it just wasn't as mighty and magical as I had been expecting.) I believe the book was written for young adults, but I found it more suitable for the 8-12 year old range. I rarely read either children's or young adults' books these days, but I would surmise that teenagers who read the Twilight books or The Hunger Games would find this piece a little naïve and juvenile for their tastes. The story shuns all sexual implications (Faizah won't even take off her clothes to bathe in a lake because the boys are bathing nearby) although by the end of the book, she has discovered a bit of her feminine wiles in the method she uses to make one of the bullies toe the line. A sign she is growing up, I presume.)
This book has a moral message: don't give in to the bullies, stick to your guns and do what you know is right, and learn from your experiences. And at one point, the author presents us with an aphoristic bit regarding war: "Without leaders sending their soldiers, willing or unwilling, into war, there would be no need to fight and die." Something to think about.
Faizah's Destiny is well-written prose, in a straightforward style, and it's chock-full of quick-paced adventures. I would not hesitate to recommend it for the 8-12 age group and so I'm happy to give it 4 stars.

The head of market storyteller, Abu Nuwas, contains many a story, as shown in the first book of tales, Setara’s Genie, in which the tales are told to a young spice seller. This time round Abu is regaling a young lame boy, telling him the story of a missing magician, and the students who go looking for him. Led by a farmer’s daughter named Faizah, an orphan, a slave, and a rich man’s son all work together to find Master Wafai. Complicating things is Dev, the god of war, who hankers after starting a major human conflict, and sets the rescuers against each other in an attempt to bring this about. The teens will triumph, of course. Or will they? To find out, you have to join the lame boy in listening to the tale, which, as before, Abu only lets out in installments. A good read for those who like fantasy tales with spunky heroines.

I've read this book since I am a fan of Ms. Dasef's other stories set in the mid-east. I found it to be just as adventurous as her others. The characters the author takes from mythology coupled with her imagination are fascinating. The adventure of the search a fun read. I recommend this novel to kids of all ages. You won't be disappointed.

Faizah's Destiny is a great book about a girl named Faiza who wants to find out why the village magician has disappeared. She thinks he left a clue for her, because she finds his most precious book open and marked with an x with chalk. She thinks he is telling her to seek the magical birds the Simurghs who are not very far away. She and three boys from her class head to the mountains where the Simurghs are said to be found. They meet a strange little man who said he would bring them to the Simurghs. But he is actually a spirit leading them to a battle between good and evil. Faiza meets the good goddess Anahita who tells her about the war the spirit is bringing them to. The goddess persuades Faiza to help her win the war and warns her that the boys will betray her.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes Fantasies and Myths. This book has lots of magical creatures from the Middle East like Simurghs, Gods, Griffins, Flying Horses, and lots more. I'd highly recommend reading this book!

Enchanting read

As a fan of Marva Dasef's The Witches of Galdorheim Series, I had to try Faizah's Destiny, another charming read. While roaming enchanted worlds and meeting magical creatures, Faizah and her friends struggle with problems every young and old reader can relate to. Follow your dream or stay loyal to your friends? Why shouldn't a girl be allowed to come along on the quest she suggested? And what to do about those bullies? Read and you'll find out.
