Debunking Howard Zinn: Exposing the Fake History That Turned a Generation against America Hardcover – August 20, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Zinn’s history is popular, but it is also massively wrong.
Scholar Mary Grabar exposes just how wrong in her stunning new book Debunking Howard Zinn, which demolishes Zinn’s Marxist talking points that now dominate American education.
In Debunking Howard Zinn, you’ll learn, contra Zinn:
- How Columbus was not a genocidal maniac, and was, in fact, a defender of Indians
- Why the American Indians were not feminist-communist sexual revolutionaries ahead of their time
- How the United States was founded to protect liberty, not white males’ ill-gotten wealth
- Why Americans of the “Greatest Generation” were not the equivalent of Nazi war criminals
- How the Viet Cong were not well-meaning community leaders advocating for local self-rule
- Why the Black Panthers were not civil rights leaders
Grabar also reveals Zinn’s bag of dishonest rhetorical tricks: his slavish reliance on partisan history, explicit rejection of historical balance, and selective quotation of sources to make them say the exact opposite of what their authors intended. If you care about America’s past—and our future—you need this book.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“At long last we have a comprehensive critique of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, an execrable work of pseudohistory, full of mistakes, lies, half-truths, and smears.” -- Peter A. Coclanis ― Albert R. Newsome Distinguished Professor of History
“Mary Grabar has produced a devastating analysis of the lies, plagiarism, violation of academic standards, and simple-minded platitudes that characterize Howard Zinn’s best-selling A People’s History of the United States…. as Grabar demonstrates, it has contributed to a serious and potentially disastrous misunderstanding of American history and society.” -- Harvey Klehr ― professor emeritus of politics and history at Emory University
“Zinn’s book has probably done more to poison the minds of high school students than any other work of history. Grabar provides an overdue anatomy of Zinn’s many errors and tendentious interpretations of the United States as an evil, racist empire…. a much-needed antidote to one of the chief intellectual frauds of our time.” -- Roger Kimball ― editor and publisher of the New Criterion and author of Tenured Radicals and The Long March

- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2025The author of "A People's History of the United States," Howard Zinn was a Marxist. His history was not only biased, with false descriptions and analysis of events, it was also poorly researched and plagiarized other writers with some edits to hide the plagiarism. This book exposes this fraud. It should be required additional reading in high school and college.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2025Enlightening book about the education system's darling.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019The author does an excellent job at exposing the numerous falsehoods replete throughout Zinn's "People's History of the United States." Zinn saw the United States through the lens of Marxism and hated what he perceived. He sees everything in terms of oppressors (white men) and victims (everybody else). Zinn purposely rejected the concept of objective history.
Ms. Grabar goes to Zinn's sources and reveals that he mainly cribbed his material almost verbatim from other Leftist's criticisms of America. She also shows that Zinn even omitted passages from his sources that ran counter to his theme. Zinn also selectively edits quotations of historical figures in order to put words in the mouths of his designated villains. If that wasn't sufficient, he would just create a Big Lie (such as WWII was white-race civil war) and then deflect by then either disclaiming "some disagree" or "just asking questions" (all while implying he was informing his readers of what REALLY happened). In Zinn's Marxian viewpoint, the root of all evil is the concept of property and the un-equitable distribution of wealth, and the United States is the manifestation of that evil. Unsurprisingly, Ms. Grabar reveals that Zinn managed to parlay his fame into a nice income. (Collectivists always seek to do great things with your money, not their's).
Howard Zinn was a charismatic Marxist demagogue that hated the United States. It is a tragedy that his polemic has gained so much undeserved praise and regard. Hopefully, Ms. Grabar's work will be the beginning of consigning Zinn to the dust-bin of history and repairing the damage he and his acolytes have done to the national psyche. Anyone interested in an honest appraisal of American history should read this book in order to be better able to discuss why Zinn's "People's History" is such a fraudulent book.
I hope that Ms. Grabar is considering adapting this book into a version more suitable for children.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2023When I read Howard Zinns A People's History in high school, my high school teachers shared with us the so-called overwrought warning about his take on American history being a problematic, even communist perspective. My teachers were gratuitously well informed enough to warn us about insisting on evidence for all claims, lest we stay into ideology that did not make sense, or is downright evil. I felt as others did in the 90s and early 2000s that the excesses of Historical revisionism would take themselves out with the trash given that the evidence did not support it. The excesses being not the historical events themselves, but the pre-bourne conclusion of America conceived in racism, therefore as an inherently evil nation, and collective racial guilt as inherent to one's birth and actionable, surmounting ones character or actions. It did not filter out, it festered into postmodernism junk that took over Universities. Instead, this racialized form of history has become astroturfed as seeds of the exact kind of twisted racial ideological clout that its apologists claim to rebel against, avowed by celebrities, so-called scholars and teachers besotted by public teacher unions eager to give up pretense and start the struggle sessions. Given the obsessive racial hysteria in the US that has plainly ensued because of Zinn's grave act of pervasive Historical charlatanism, I would say not only is this a necessary book, but that Zinns history should be taken out of all American public schools and disavowed like the psuedohistory it is. If we manage to heed Grabars warning before our public school systems' history becomes totally rotted out with lies, she deserves accolades for her work.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2022Zinn was a Polemic. His Communist obsession distorted any chance to champion Capitalism for a Free people as he spewed his poison to generations. Anyone who attends meetings five days out of seven is bound to become brainwashed, Zinn was. To cut and paste others words to fit his one view narrative is quite frankly deceptive and dishonest. But the Commie's adhere to, the ends justify the means. Given where we are today 2022 with Covid19 tyranny, and our Constitutional abuses. I note credit for Zinn's alarm of a greedy corporate threat to the Republic. Today we have a Predator Capitalism that has roared into Fascism, albeit with the directives/capture by the CCP. The orchestration and takeover of Public Education to become Public Indoctrination by school boards & teacher's unions. Have ushered in these Marxist-Commie Zinn exploits and clearly diminished the IQ of current and future generations. Social justice, gender identity, pronouns, etc., have Nothing to do with an academic education. Rather these are tools of seduction for the Marxist ideology. Great read and well researched. I do wish the author had addressed the False Flag coup's of countries guised to save us from Communism with a greater motive being economic benefit of the power elites. Its the corruption by people that taints America not the idea of America and the beacon of light it casts across the world.

This is REAL historical analysis rather than the ideological driven polemic which is the subject of her excellent, and sourced, chapter by chapter debunking. Mary Grabar does all students of history a great service in this wonderful book. A must read.
Silly GReviewed in Canada on January 1, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Excellent job by Mary Grabar. This book shows the lies and manipulations that Howard Zinn's book is full of. He wanted people to hate America and he perverted history to do it. Imagine if someone were to right a 'Peoples History of Africa/Middle East/India/Asia', etc', type of book as Zinn did with America. You would not have to make up anything, all the slavery, genocide, rape, oppression, corruption, etc would be real. Zinn did not give America a fair shake at all. And Zinn ignores all the amazing good America does and has done. All those other countries are still practicing slavery and often still have genocides, but Zinn does not want anyone to realize that. America has sent Billions of dollars, doctor's, medicine, food and protection to all those countries that still practice the worst forms of oppression. Time to start keeping score, time to stop apologizing. I once had an Indian friend attack Canada as evil, oppressive and racist. I reminded him of all the slaves, Untouchables, and child rape that occurs in India today and in the past, and all the programs Canada has to help Indian Immigrants, he had no comment on that. Nearly every nation on earth has a Native population, can you guess which countries offer their Natives land, free school, tax breaks, jobs? It is U.S.A., Canada and Australia. In the Middle East they kill the Yazidis, lets compare how the natives are treated here compared to everywhere else. Criticism to the U.S.A. should always be answered with "lets keep score, lets compare us to other countries".Great book, read it.
