My focus, rather, is on the writing skill exhibited by the author. Herrick does an impressive job capturing the "culture" of mid-teens - the language, topical interests, peer and sibling relationships, and attitudes toward and interactions with adults, especially parents. Her use of the first person point of view gives the reader access to the major character's thoughts and feelings and the turmoil of both that can sometimes be part of the teen experience. In addition, her descriptions of people and settings are rich in the kind of detail that gives the reader a "feel" for the personhood and individuality of characters and the context of the story - an almost Dickensian quality to her descriptions. (BTW, this talent for descriptive writing is consistent in the three books of Herrick's that I have read.)
I recommend this book to both teens and parents of teens. Teens will be able to relate to the content; it will register as authentic. Parents may gain some insights into the inner life of teens - their thinking processes and emotional experiences. Both groups can enjoy an intriguing story and the work of an accomplished writer.
A quick read, not just because of length, but also because both the story and the writing enthrall.
Katie almost sixteen, ends up spending her summer at a cabin with her family. Not what she had planned for her summer. But when she finds out that the boy she has been crushing on is also there for the summer, things suddenly look a little brighter.
Alex is the boy that Katie has crushed on forever. And she has a plan to get him as pretend boyfriend for the summer.Things work out great for them.Until Alex's ex-girlfriend shows up and has plans of her own.
This a cute, humorous little story on growing up,love and learning.I quite enjoyed this summer read.
It could be because it's been a while since I've read any type of teenage angst romances that a found Katie to be very annoying at the beginning. Yet, I'm happy that I stuck with this novel because, while I wouldn't call this a "true love story," I liked how dynamic this novel is as it makes Katie's struggles with finding love with her "Mr. Right" even more compelling to read.
Together I found Katie and Alex to be a cute work-in-progress because they are still teens learning their likes and dislikes about relationships. In addition, even though I didn't always like him as a character, I enjoyed reading about how Alex and his relationship with Katie grows throughout this novel. I especially enjoyed it because I liked reading/finding out how much integrity Alex has; it was endearing to learn.
Overall, I recommend this novel to YA romance fans.
