Not Your Father’s OD&D

I bought this based on previous reviews, but after receiving my copy I have to disagree. I will make allowances that it cannot be exactly the same as the original game for legal reasons, as detailed in the introduction. That being said, this isn’t the original. There are far too many differences. This game takes far too much inspiration from later editions for my taste. The devil is in the details. In particular, the spell Magic Missile required an attack roll in the original game and in Holmes Basic. I was looking forward to a game that preserved that original content. Instead, I get a nod to Moldvay Basic, which split the difference between OD&D and AD&D. It deals the OD&D damage, but it automatically hits. I love that game for what it is. But that’s not what the promotional copy or reviews for this game promised. What you’ll get is essentially a home brew that falls somewhere between OD&D and Moldvay Basic. Gamers seeking OD&D should play it, Holmes Basic, or perhaps White Box. My two coppers.

Want to play ur-D&D? Not Basic D&D, not Advanced D&D (1E), but primeval Dungeons & Dragons with the three Little Brown Books + supplements? Here's your book. Iron Falcon is a clean, organized presentation of the original rules + the first supplement (Greyhawk, hence the title Iron Falcon), that's easier to understand, refer to, and cheaper than picking up an Original Collector's Edition off eBay. Greyhawk's the supplement that added important elements like variable hit-dice, variable weapon damage, and the Thief class to the game, so Iron Falcon's more like the D&D descendants you remember than the 3 LBBs in isolation. Iron Falcon's also closer to the original than its competitor Swords & Wizardry in that it preserves the old Saving Throw system.

This is an excellent retro-clone of classic D&D; unlike Mr Gonnerman's Basic Fantasy RPG (which is based chiefly on the 1981–2 edition with a few liberties), this looks to 1975, the white books plus the Greyhawk supplement. What makes this both unique and useful is that one other edition of classic D&D was based on the white books and Greyhawk: the Holmes Basic set of 1977. As a continuation for carrying a Holmes campaign above 3rd level, you won't do better than Iron Falcon.

I've been playing this edition in a game with my 11-year old. I started playing in the 1980's with Mentzer's red box, but I never had a chance to play the original edition. Iron Falcon has inspired me to explore rules that predate me by a few years. It's well-organized and conjures the old-school feel very well. Iron Falcon is definitely in my rotation.

This is D&D "White box" plus the first supplement "Greyhawk". It is a well put together and authentic version combined together into one book. The clue is in the name Iron Falcon = Greyhawk. Although Blackmoor and Eldritch Wizardy would contribute much to improve the game in their own right, it was Greyhawk that really shook things up. Greyhawk introduces the final character archetype, the Thief, along with the Paladin class and one more playable race, the half-elf, along with a few new monsters. The big changes it makes however are the introduction of variable hit dice for different character classes and variable weapon damage. Up to this point all classes had used a d6 for hit points and all weapons did a d6 damage. These changes were huge. It also greatly expands bonuses and penalties for character stats and introduces a huge number of new spells including the well loved shield and magic missile spells. ( Although the version of magic missile provided is not the original version). Chris Gonnerman has done a great job with this and at a mere £7 it's excellent value.
