Emmy and Golden Globe winner Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) delivers a masterful performance as steely DS Stella Gibson in this heart-pounding psychological thriller. Called to Belfast to investigate a high-profile murder, Gibson quickly realizes that a serial killer prowls the city. The culprit is Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan, Fifty Shades of Grey), a grief counselor and family man driven by vicious compulsions. As Gibson closes in on Spector, both the hunter and the hunted outmaneuver each other in a sinister game of cat and mouse. Will Gibson make Spector pay for his crimes before the death toll rises? An “intelligent show with tremendous acting” (The Atlantic), critics rave that “Anderson is sublime, almost otherworldly, while Dornan…matches her for icy charisma” (Daily Mail, UK). This complete collection of the award-winning drama also stars Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), John Lynch (In the Name of the Father), and Colin Morgan (Merlin, Humans).

The Fall is a wonderful series, set in Belfast, about a serial killer, Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan and the police investigating the crimes, lead by Gillian Anderson's character SIO Gibson. While the show had some ancillary storylines going (especially in the first season) it plays out ultimately as a cat-and-mouse game between the two lead characters. Spector is a family man, with a normal job as a grief counselor, who also stalks and kills women in Belfast. Anderson's character comes from London to help track down and arrest the killer. The first season is really about the investigation, and seasons two and three are about the attempt to prove Spector's guilt and take him down. I will not go into any details beyond that so as not to spoil it for people who have not seen the series. Each season is very short, consisting of just 6 episodes, all about an hour long give or take a few minutes. Within the handful of shows, there is a lot of character development, even with the focus being on Anderson and Dornan's characters. It is a series where nearly every character is flawed in some way and really tries to hammer the point that even the lead characters are not all good or all bad.
For those who get the set on blu ray, it looks great as you would imagine on the high definition format. Even though it is not a special effects laden action show, the cinematography is very good, and the visuals of the city come out very well. Each season is spread across two discs. The second disc for each season has a behind the scenes featurette anywhere from 8-12 minutes, and then some deleted scenes and a photo gallery. Good for what is included, but not a ton of material. If you only get the physical discs when a ton of extra material is added, then you may want to just stick with steaming it.
Overall the show is very well written and acted. It is as much a psychological show as it is anything else. It is not chalked full of action, but there is some. There is the main police investigation aspect, with some misdirection thrown in, but it also has a large theme of how Spector being caught affects the lives of his family and those around him. It is a great show that is definitely worth checking out.
