Quell is a game app for the Kindle Fire and other platforms. It's a zen-like puzzle game with delightful music and gameplay which is both soothing and challenging.
The basic premise is fairly simple. You have a single screen to work with, and a drop of water. That drop of water has to cross all glowing pearls on the screen in as few moves as possible. So there's no stressful timer, no blaring music. Just you and the puzzle before you.
If you look at the screenshots in the top image area, the water drop is the larger blue object, and the pearls are the smaller golden objects.
The water drop goes in any horizontal or vertical direction, and it slides until it hits a wall.
In the top left is your current move count - zero - and the ideal count of moves you're aiming for.
Of course once you get into the levels, things get more tricky. There are one-way gates. There are objects that prick and burst your water drop. There are objects that reverse the prickers. There are teleporters. All of these gadgets help keep the game interesting.
The game ramps up very nicely. The tutorials help you understand the basics, and then each new level builds on the skills.
And the music! It is soothing and wonderful. I love the visuals and music here. It helps the game
If you get stuck, there's even a hints database. You earn "coins" by getting perfect scores on the easier games, and then if you do end up getting stuck on something you can spend one of those coins to unlock the solution for the puzzle. The hint is more than a hint - it walks you step by step through the correct solution, so you can learn the technique.
Even the backgrounds are lovely - watercolor landscapes with gentle rain falling down the screen.
Are there any downsides here? I suppose if someone is an action junkie and needs that pounding rock music to enjoy a game, they won't get it here.
But other than that, the game is great for all ages, it's challenging, it's good for the brain, and it's relaxing. For me that's an ideal mixture.
I purchased Quell with my own funds for the purpose of doing this review.
this game is okay. I like the relaxing music and it works just fine on my kindle. It's a little bit too simple and boring for me. I'm a Hardcore puzzle game player and this one just isn't challenging enough in my opinion. I will probably keep playing it only because I paid a buck for it, but I'll play it when I'm REALLY bored or when I'm not in the mood to challenge my brain.
From the music, to the serene feel of what is, after all, a sort of bubble buster, or non-buster, in this case, there is nothing I dislike or feel needs improvement about this game. The graphics are clean and clear. The music and the retro touches are soothing. The variety of puzzles is excellent and the introduction of new elements such as moveable blocks, "poison" drops, and so forth, keeps it fresh. Some game designers do not seem to be able to cope with touch screen controls. (Dead by Dawn comes to mind) These folks at Fallen Tree Games have it down flawlessly.
Two features in particular help raise gameplay a notch above. One is the on screen Undo. When you are stuck on a puzzle or your drop has been "killed", you do not have to exit out the menu to start over; just hit undo. The rev's have also maximized the gameplay possible on what is, after all, a rather small screen. They have done this by using more screen than they have by allowing the moving drop to exit screen left and come back into the game grid screen right on the same grid row. The same for top to bottom and vice versatile. The hints and tutorial are also clear and flawless which is all to often not the case in my recent experience. I recommend this game to anyone in search of a relaxing yet challenging pastime. I think I could feel my blood pressure drop as I was playing. The music is just right. A little Zen new age feeling without too many weird tonality scales or Asian musical instruments that may jar Western ears. Five stars and worth every penny. The dev has also included a big tasty and playable bite of the sequel game free of charge.
Honestly, I wasn't very excited about this game reading the Product Description of it. I figured I'd try it because it's the FAOTD, but didn't expect to like it. I am now addicted and have been playing it on and off for a couple hours.
The tutorial to get you started is really helpful and the in game hints (which you can turn off through the options menu) are great to introduce you to new hazards and elements. When you hit "Play" it takes you to a bookshelf that is labeled with a year and three picture frames. Click on a picture frame and there's four levels to play. It's a unique way to set up the stage select. The levels are fun, they add new elements all the time that keeps it interesting. It also tells you the minimum number of moves you can beat it in, so you can go back to try to get a perfect score. There are achievements you can get for various things and you can earn coins to unlock hints. The graphics are crisp and the music is good (but I always turn music and sounds off anyway).
The details are what makes this game 5 stars. It would be a fun game no matter what, but the extras make all the difference. Even if it doesn't look like a fun game based on the description, give it a chance and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
I found this game quite frustrating as my brain often just would not come up with the solution.it is enjoyable though and when I did get it right it was very satisfying.the first few levels were okay then it gets much harder.you can retry though and you earn coins which you can use to get answers if you want to skip a puzzle.
Un gioco che non smette di appassionarmi. Si tratta veramente di far "girare" il cervello. In piu' e' molto ben fatto graficamente, e' rilassante e con una colonna sonora molto soft e piacevole. Per tutti quelli che "odiano" i giochi dove bisogna dare cazzotti, sparare, saltare, fare capriole, lanciare fiamme, bombe ecc. ecc.
