As usual, I loved this book! Likeable characters, hot sex, humor, and a good story. I liked that it could have been a stand-alone book, but those who have read the first three books in the Assassins series will see some recurring parts. My only "complaint" is that I would have liked an epilogue at the end. Hopefully book 4 has a bit about Jordan and Aynslee. Toni has a great writing style and I'm looking forward to the next book - wish this novella had been a full-length novel!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not into sports. At all. Besides ogling some of the players, I have no interest. Yet for some reason, I love Toni Aleo’s Assassins series! There is just something about her characters and writing I love. This novella was no exception!

Aynslee is 31, a teacher, and she is single. Coming from a large Irish family, there is a lot of pressure for her to marry, have babies etc. Jordan Ryan is a goalie for the Nashville Assassins. He used to be the best of the best, but two years ago he was injured. Now he is just the backup goalie. Aynslee and Jordan meet on an airplane. There is an instant attraction between the two. Jordan was great- but I Aynslee won me over right away!

She won me over right then and there. Ever since Jordan was injured, he has become insecure both on and off the ice. Aynslee knows that instant connection they felt is something she has to pursue, so even though Jordan is a little shy- she goes after him. Aynslee is sweet, funny, and supportive of Jordan. Although Jordan is shy and insecure at first, he is also very sweet, sexy and just amazing! Loved these two together. With Jordan’s career on the line, he isn’t sure where their relationship is going, he’s afraid of someone getting hurt, but he has to be with her.

This was a fabulous novella. It was emotional, sweet, steamy and heartwarming. The ending left me with a huge smile on my face! All fans of The Assassin's series need to pick this one up right away!

Falling For the Backup is a novella in Toni Aleo's Assassins series. A few characters from her earlier books make an appearance or are mentioned, but if you've never read the books, don't fret because Falling for the Backup easily stands alone. If you're worried about spoilers for the other books in the series, you have nothing to worry about.

Aynslee Shaw has had a terrible day and she can't wait to go home. To make matters worse her suitcase is stolen and she's stuck wearing a dreadful bridesmaid dress. Jordan Ryan is having a difficult day and the only thing on his mind is his hockey career. When he spots Aynslee he's intrigued, but he quickly realizes she's the type of girl that deserves it all and he can't offer her anything without knowing his career prospects. Jordan walks away from Aynslee, but when a chance encounters bring them together will Jordan take what he wants or will he walk away?

Ah, let me fangirl for a bit! I loved Jordan! Every time he walked away from Aynslee I wanted to shake him, but I realized his inner turmoil because he wanted to be worthy of her. Characterization is a bit weak, but it is a novella and there's only so much character development you can do. That being said, I do feel as if I got to know Aynslee and Jordan pretty well as a couple. We find out early on what Jordan's disappointment is and what he wants for the future. As for Aynslee, I was left trying to figure her out. It was pretty clear Jordan wanted a family and someone to come home to, but I didn't feel Aynslee's need for someone. Aleo tends to develop her female characters early on and you feel like you know them, but I didn't get that with Aynslee. She's also the first character Aleo has given us that doesn't have excessive baggage and problems opening up.

I really love the Assassins Series, even though I know nothing about hockey, Toni Aleo is giving me a hockeymacation. My favorite type of series are the ones that aren't cliffy and the same characters are part of each book. I get attached to the hockey players and their families and friends. It's like a reunion when I get to read each new book and catch up on their lives. I love Toni's writing style, she makes me feel like I'm in the room as I laugh at the witty banter and blush at the sexy scenes. Falling For The Backup is a short, sweet, funny, and hot novella. The chemistry between Aynslee & Jordan (aka Mr. Sex) is immediate and strong. I really enjoyed getting to know them and look forward to many more books in this series. ❤️

I love Toni Aleo's books, but I was worried when I saw she had a novella that it wouldn't be as good. Aleo writes great stories, but they are long. I shouldn't have worried though, this was brief but good.

Jordan Ryan is the backup goalie for the Assassins. He went out for an injury and, during recovery, Tate Odder (from prior book) was pulled up to cover for him. As we found in the last book though, Odder fast became the best goalie in the league, leaving Jordan out of luck when he had healed up, sitting on the bench game after game. Odder was 22 and Jordan 33, but Jordan did not want to look at retirement. Hence, we find him in the start of this book on a plane home after interviewing with some other teams. Aynslee is on the same plane coming from a family wedding, and they meet. Sparks fly but Jordan walks away, feeling he is not in a place to start a relationship as he is leaving the area soon and isn't even sure where given another team hasn't picked him up yet.

They meet again, and once more, before he gives in. They both feel the connection, but the career situation for Jordan is the uncertainty here. I did feel the solution was rather obvious if they communicated better, thus losing a star, but realize the author had to put some drama into the book somewhere or it would have been dull.

We see Shea briefly in this one, and hear a tiny bit about a couple of other players for the Assassins. This is a novella though, so not much room for other characters. It was just over 100 pages and wrapped up. I enjoyed it as a quick light read. Very enjoyable.
