Editorial Reviews

Singer John Mellencamp makes his acting and directing debut in this heartfelt love story about a famous singer's return to his small-town roots. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry Mc Murtry, FALLING FROM GRACE travels the same rural roads as Mellencamp's best music. Jetting in from Los Angeles, Singer Bud Parks (Mellencamp) and his wife Alice (Mariel Hemingway) return to his Indiana hometown to celebrate his grandfather's 80th birthday. But once there, Bud immediately returns to the wildways of his youth.

Having been a Mellencamp fan for 20+ years, I must say that he never ceases to amaze me with the versatility of his talents. This movie was no exception! I must admit the movie is even better the second time you see it and each time thereafter; you catch subtlities and details you miss the first time while simply following the plot. Having grown up in a town and being happily transplanted to the country and farm life made this movie even better for me. It is so similar in many ways to the type of life and things that a lot of us "farm folk" experience. The "realness" of the people only served as an incredible tool to further enhance the story and as usual, there is a lesson hidden therein. The scenary is beautiful. I only regret that 5 stars is all I could give it; it deserves more. "Falling From Grace" IS a good movie and my Johnny Boy shows everyone that he can also be a good actor/director. Folks, don't pass this one by, especially if you have ever had any ties to or passion for the country and/or farm life. And be sure to watch it at least twice!!

i have no idea why so many folks are bashing this film. sure its not a special effects extravaganza with a huge hollywood budget . but as a movie exploring small town life and the things left behind its pretty good. mellencamp's acting is suttle but pretty decent in my opinion. the ultimate test of a good movie is if it entertains and it did the trick for me.

JM has shown yet another side of his talent with this movie. It is now clear that this man is more than a musician and an artist -- John Mellencamp is an actor and director who can touch on so many real emotions. Like his songs, this movie is about 'real' people, and how even famous people have to face their demons and deal with life's trials.

This is more than a "hidden gem", this is The Most Under-Rated Movie Ever Made. In fact, it's a perfect film. The story is deep. The acting is real. Real accents, too! The scenes are authentic. There is drama and violence and you can't predict what's going to happen. The star/director does not portray himself as a brilliant misunderstood genius, and instead drags us step by step through a magnificent meltdown. A real fall from grace. There is nothing wrong with this movie. It cannot be improved upon. It is a movie that will touch the heart of anyone who has watched someone self-destruct, or has experienced self-destructive episodes. In short, this is a movie for all young men or anyone who knows one. I do not give 10/10 to many films (just 32 films out of the 4797 I have rated) but this one deserves it. It's a great movie! It's The Most Under-Rated Movie Ever Made.

John Mellencamp does a sensitive job of directing his first starring
film. He portrays a country singing star who returns to his hometown
of Seymour, Indiana, and soon is wronging his wife, played by sexy
Mariel Hemingway. Mellencamp's dad and grandpa, played by the wonderful
"redneck" actors, Claude Akins and Dub Taylor, are seriously oversexed,
and the curse has descended down to him. Everyone despises his weakness,
himself most of all. Mellencamp resolves his guilt in the most idiotic
way imaginable. Don't try this at home!

I like the verisimilitude of this southern Indiana-shot movie. You
will savor the porches and kitchens, chicken farm, fishin' creek,
roller rink, shot 'n' beer joint, and breakfast diner, where mean Claude
Akins delivers a big plate o' beat-up. Look for folksinger John Prine
as Mellencamp's brother-in-law. Some critics have roasted Mellencamp's
performance; I think he is adequately natural. To sum, it's a "little
movie that could."

So when he says, "I can't dance." I am thinking to myself, "Okay, this guy admits to lying on a song I have from an album that goes way back -but no way am I buying this one; I have seen "Crumblin Down" and believe what he says about his dancing ability. I had to chuckle on this line.
Loved, how raw and real this movie is. But then, I love it because of who he is; Depends on where you come at the movie from, whether you will love it 4 the heart in it or for just another movie watched.

Masterful work by John Mellencamp and it was great to see familiar stars like Claude Akins. And who could ever forget Slim Pickens? The music is vintage Country/Western from a well known artist, it was familiar and fitting for this movie. I especially like the choice of vehicles in the movie and the story line is a genuine original.

This purchase was my second copy of this DVD, my sister must have liked the first copy I purchased when she borrowed it as I never got it back. Hence the second purchase as I can't resist keeping a copy around for myself.

Yikes.... this was a bad one! I love Mellencamp music and was hoping for a Purple Rain type of thing - you know, a decent storyline with the star's music played throughout. Hemmingway is good, but everything else is really bad.
