With over fifty years in the regulated insurance and securities businesses, I thought myself pretty well informed about the legislative process but quickly discovered I had much to learn. It's one heck of an interesting and informative read starting with the amazing accomplishments of Bob Woodson's "little platoon" in Chapter 1. After reading through Chapter 4 that detailed Senator DeMint's first hand observations and experiences with the inevitable financial incentive conflict of interest between regulators and the BIGS---government, corporations, institutions and labor unions, I pondered and related his experiences which were similar to several of my own.
He opines that the irresistible "cashing in" by regulators or staffs is not sinister, it's merely "human nature" for them to aspire to eventually becoming a high paid lobbyist for one that he/she now helps regulate. He makes a compelling case that the successful and increasing "small platoons" can reverse the tide of big government which is the key to minimizing special interest legislation. I believe he also means we need to help get the fiscally conservative republicans and democrats to take note and get to the polls in November. I happen to agree, so I went back to the book store; bought four more copies to give to family or friends and then one more from Amazon so I could post my review.
Being from his hometown of Greenville, as one might suspect, I've supported Jim since he entered politics. He's much younger than me so I can't claim to know him well but we've met and he is clearly not another equivocating politician---he's an intelligent person of character that has proven he can not be bought! The only place I'd rather see him than at The Heritage Foundation in the future is in the White House in 2016.

I have been pretty busy lately and didn't get to reading this book when it came, but I finally opened it up and was drawn in immediately. The further I got, the more I was impressed with the message and how it is a truly non-partisan look at America, it's foundational principles, the policies that have helped and the policies that have hurt us. Abounding with statistics and written in a tone that respects all who have good intentions, it is a book I will recommend to all, friends and family on both sides of the aisle. This is not a divisive book: it is instructional, and could wake up a lot of people to ways we might be able to save our country from collapse.
In essence it shows, with statistics, how the bigger the government gets, the less responsive it is to the people. A few years ago, this nation was abounding in grass roots organizations that worked ( DeMint's "platoons")and these groups were rock solid and their members responsive to and supportive of one another. As government gets bigger, it again and again makes rules and regulations that stifle the smaller groups, while never replacing them. Well supported with evidence. It is lovingly done and adamant that we all want this sense of support and connection. It is irreplaceable, yet being replaced by nothing, and we all suffer.

My respect for DeMint has skyrocketed! Check out this book!

Though I have not completely finished reading this book, it is an excellent source for reviewing how our great nation has been plundered by the very candidates we have elected and/or reelected to represent us in both state and national elections. Term limits for all offices should be established to eliminate the people who have chosen to spend their lifetime in office. This would prevent "good old boy" candidates from being reelected into office.

I'm an old person and what Mr. DeMint wrote describes the way life was when I was growing up. Our community was built around the church, Protestant and Catholic neighbors working together and taking care of each other. We played outside, listened to the Lone Ranger on the radio at night after it got dark. Everyone knew everyone in the neighbor and pitched in to help when needed.

We wouldn't have know there was a government if it wasn't for civics class in school. No abortions, drugs, racial problems nor gay people.

Jim DeMint is trying to make people understand that the US Government cannot run our lives in an efficient and good manner for anyone. We have forgotten how people took care of each other before the time of big government. We need to get this back if we are to have a Country that follows the traditions of the Founding Fathers, etc. I'm not sure we can get back there but if we are ever to do so we must think and use some of these methods on a wider basis. I hope we can succeed.

He knows what Big Government is all about. He was part of it and now (thank goodness) he is at The Heritage Foundation.
His explanations and examples of how the benefits to society are LESS with big government, big business, big banks, etc., and MORE with the small Platoons of family, neighborhoods, communities, church, etc.

I wish more folks "on the political fence" would have a look and consider his knowledgeable perspective

Once I got into the forward by Ben Carson, I found that I could not put the book down! I did not find it to be political, but rather plain old down-to-earth common sense reading.
