I am lowering this knife from 5 stars to 2 stars. I had to return it.
I used it to cut some pears last night and right after I clean it up I noticed some small micro chips on the blade edge. I did some more research online and found out the VG10 material on the F1 are prone to chipping. I've also read that the chipping "may" go away after you sharpen it. I am not too sure about that...
I understand VG10 is a hard material but chipping after cutting fruit is too much for me. And for a brand new life I need to sharpen it in order for it to possibly not chip is just a crazy idea to me. It is a beautiful knife but I am going to return it.
I am a knife collector. Before getting this knife I thought about getting the ESEE 3/4 but I am not really set on the 1095 carbon steel as they are known to rust. I also thought about getting the ESEE 4 in 440C stainless steel. But the 440C doesn't really interest me either, especially when it's the same price range as the Fallkniven F1.
So at the end I picked up the Fallkniven F1 with the Zytel sheath. I thought about getting the leather sheath but I don't think a leather sheath on a stainless steel survival knife make much sense. Also, leather in my house tend to mold a lot. So the leather sheath is out and the zytel sheath is in. Some people complaint about the zytel sheath saying it's too cheap. I actually have no problem with it and I like it a lot. In fact, I think some of my knifes have cheaper sheath. The zytel sheath is really thin and can hold the knife securely. I can put the whole thing in my pocket and it doesn't even stick out.
Nothing else is needed to be said on the knife that hasn't be said before. If you search this knife on YouTube you will find tons of reviews on them. But I was still surprise when I get it and the knife pass the paper test with flying color. In fact, when I ran my finger on it it actually scrape some of my fingerprints off. It's crazy sharp.
I still think about buying the ESEE 4 in stainless steel just to see how it compares to the Fallkniven F1. Maybe when I have some extra play money on the side I will get it.
Came super sharp and it's easy to sharpen on a strop.
So far awesome for bushcraft and great for animal processing like fish and hunting. Great spine for ferro rod striking.
First of all I bought this knife for the blade knowing that I would have to replace the sheath to get the system I wanted.
Not a fan of the sheath. It is light, feels and looks cheap. It may hold up better than kydex in colder weather. It reminds me of a dive knife sheath. But on a premium knife like the F1 I would expect better and even pay more for a better one.
VG10 laminated steel with a convex grind. This edge excells at wood processing. The handle is basic but works well! Great grip, wet or dry, with or without gloves. Great edge retention, easy to restore back to razor sharpness.
The Fallkniven F1 VG10 is the quintessential companion knife, it is great for backpacking, camping, hunting and day hikes. I would recommend getting a different sheath. I went with the survival sheath from Apocalypse Gear, it comes with a kydex sheath with a 3 inch leather belt loop, large tek-loc, a light my fire magnesium fire starter and a single maxpadition pouch that can hold a sharpening stone or multi-tool for $100
If you are on the fence about purchasing one, just do it! You will not regret it for a single minute.
