2287. The sole survivor of a cryogenic suspension experiment stumbles out of Vault 111 to find their home city of Boston a blasted ruin, devastated in a nuclear war that took place two centuries earlier. The Commonwealth, as the region is now called, is divided between warring factions of raiders and mutants, all living in fear of the Institute and its enigmatic human-like robots, the synths. The sole survivor has to make their way in the world, survive...and find their missing son.

Fallout 4 is the fifth main game (and ninth overall) in the Fallout franchise of post-apocalyptic roleplaying games. As with the previous two games in the series (Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas), the game is played from a first-person perspective. You create a character and set out to explore the wasteland. Although there is a main storyline to follow, you are free to ignore it and pursue side-quests, do jobs for various factions or simply explore and scavenge for loot and money. Fallout 4 also introduces the idea of settlement building, allowing you to construct entire new towns and outposts in the wilderness and establish shops, trading links and supply lines between them.

This type of gameplay, sometimes called "sandbox" or "open world", has become enormously popular. It gives the player the freedom to decide how to play the game and allows for huge amounts of content. It also personalises the experience: every player may encounter the same enemies and missions, but the order in which they encounter them and the degree to which they vary the story and their own activities will be unique to them.

I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard Fallout fan, I’ve played all of them but New Vegas, which I’m doing a play through of now. I’ve liked them but never felt the same way toward the series as I do the Elder Scrolls. I think Fallout 4 is a well done evolution in the series with a few missteps thrown in.

I think a review should be written for people unfamiliar with the product but I’ll assume if you’re checking this game out you kind of know the basic mechanics of RPGs.

The perk system (how you develop your character’s skills and abilities) has been controversial. I actually like it. It’s not dumbed down by any means. What you decide to put points in really affects game play. For my first character I invested most of my points in perception at the expense of charisma which made some of the better settlement building features unobtainable for a long time. While it doesn’t come up as often as it does in earlier games there are some conversation options you can miss out on also. Do you want to be a better shot or open advanced safes? I find myself trying to be careful of how I build my character. I like that you have to wait to reach a certain level before you can invest a perk in a higher level skill. That seems to keep things balanced. The down side is that a lot of choices you make don't really effect people's attitude toward you. You can be a sarcastic jerk but the dialog usually goes the same regardless. I haven't finished the main quest line yet but it sounds like your play style doesn't have a lot of influence. EDIT on 4/24/2016: I just finished the main story line quest and I have to say it was pretty well written.

This game is fantastic, if you want to jump out of your chair the moments will come! This game can be endless if you want it to be. Plenty of quests and the upgrading of armors and guns is mind blowing. Gigantic open world with so much to discover and is definitely by far the best Fallout ever. The fact that you can build your own town or city for that matter will keep you busy for a long time and with ordering your people what tasks to perform in your town/city is great from telling them to work on food or defense, all you have to do is tell them. The learning curve can be a challenge because of all the things that are possible in this game but if you get stuck there are plenty of fine tutorials on YouTube. I have been playing this since Christmas and have no desire to stop yet. If you feel you need more bottlecaps (which is currency) go out with a companion so you have help and more carrying capacity and go kill some raiders or mutants and loot them of their belongings so you can buy what you need to survive or build the settlement of your dreams. It will take a while to get wealthy in this game unless you cheat by using some kind of mod, but so far I have been honest and everything I own I earned. You will need a pretty nice PC if that's what you have but the graphics are great, and if you have a console you get what you get as far as graphics go. Pull the trigger you'll love it.

People seem to be giving this poor reviews simply because of the 20GB install. I understand where they are coming from as I have hughesnet with a limited data plan. I will not deduct stars for this method however as I view reviews of games for the game itself, not how the game is delivered to me. Now that we've got that out of the way, let me describe the pros and cons of this game.

The Good:
Story- While I will not go into detail of the story, I will just say that it is great, and not dull at all. The missions give you free will to complete it as you like. Maybe you will sneak your way through, or just go in guns blazing with your power armor. Bethesda has made it clear, the choice is yours.

Content- This game has given me constant side quests and places to explore. I've yet to have a "What should I do now?" moment as I have always had a side quest to do here or a place to see there to keep me entertained. These aren't your tedious or repetitive quests either, each is different and will give the player plenty of content.

Diverse Weather system- Simply put, I love what they did with the weather. Some days will be sunny, allowing you to truly admire the beauty of the post apocalyptic world, others, not so much. Fairly early on I caught in a radiation storm while fighting enemies, with no where to take shelter, it made a significant hit when it came to my radiation meter, which now reduces max health. Other times it will be a dense fog,and unless you constantly enter VATS to search for enemies around you, you can easily fall prey to a surprise attack by a legendary scorpion or deathclaw, which happened to me on one occasion.
