Great compilation of personal live choices from bassist Phil Lesh! Heavy focus on early years. Of particular note is the bouncing 60's version of "Dancin' in the Streets", maybe the most swaggering "Hard to Handle", the longest known version of "In the Midnight Hour", and a beautiful, late era "Visions of Johanna". Not to everybody's taste, however, will be the "Box of Rain". When the song came back into their live repertoire, it lost the studio version's light beauty, and gained an huskier register. I think what it lacks in smoothness, it makes up for in ragged soul.

It's everything Phil said it was in his book. Great representative selections even if not the highest quality recordings.

Visions of Johanna! And Phil!
Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2023
Overall this is a very enjoyable release. Phil's choices are fascinating and reflect his insights into the band musically and historically. The early version of Dancin' In the Street is very psychedelic, and Hard To Handle will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. I have the soundboard of that show (8-06-71) and I still prefer this audience recording slightly, in spite of the lower dynamic range and distant presentation. A 2-disc set a fan should own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Me gusta pero...
Reviewed in Spain on November 21, 2017

3.0 out of 5 stars s got a funny taste in music
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2015
Music is across several decades and covers many non-Dead "tunes" - I don't think it stands up to comparison with original Dead compositions, but these are some pf Phil's favorites, and worth a look just on that basis. He;s got a funny taste in music, y'know!
