We used the model gently, in spite of which it is only partially usable now. I have mixed opinions about it, and I strongly believe that every component in a model should be of good quality, since you will be unable to assemble it and mount it, thanks to a couple of inferior parts.
A secondary but still serious problem is that, although the age range is listed as 8+, the information booklet is written like a disorganized college student's study notes for their bio 101 exam: lots of $20 technical terms, but no real explanations of anything.
I think this model is appropriate for children 5 and up. It would also go great as an add-on gift to a microscope. (or prepared slides) So far, my son takes it down once every week of so and plays with it and reads the accompanying data manual. And if this model spurs him to learn new words like cytoskeleton or golgi apparatus, then an added bonus. For the $13 we paid, this is a 5 star item and excellent little model!
While others have had issues with getting the entire model to fit together properly, I have been able to get it to work just fine. When first putting it together, I struggled a bit, but I slowly worked on the clear cover and then held it in place for quite a while before moving and allowing it to be taken apart. The clear plastic is hard, but the blue plastic is pliable and with a little work, I have been able to get this to go together just fine. After I first got the whole thing together, I did let it sit for a few days to help the plastic adjust to the shape, and I haven't had problems since. I think if you are still having issues with it, perhaps try taking all the removable parts out, and gently heating the blue plastic in warm water before fitting the whole thing together.
