Arabella is a psychic medium who can see and speak to the dead. Not only that, but she has a sixth sense where she can look at someone (who is alive) and see who is attached to them - usually a loved one, sometimes someone who is haunting them. Her power even allows her to see deep into someone’s soul - she can see their true feelings and personality and even see their past.
Arabella enjoys speaking to the dead and exposing their untold stories. But there are some stories that require some investigation from herself… it’s this passion that lands her in trouble.
It’s an interesting story which always tested me and made me wonder about certain aspects of the stories, and more importantly, the characters in the book
The author made the story so atmospheric and creepy. You know that feeling you get after reading a really good spooky story? Where you feel there is some presence in the room just in the corner of your eye? The after-effects of the tale messing with your mind? Familiar did that for me!
Moreover, I loved Arabella as the main character. If there was such a person in reality, I would have regularly watched her “Arabella Investigates” series. I also liked the relationship between Arabella and Barnes and was SO happy that the author did not build an unnecessary romance between them. Similarly, there are some very creepy characters like Cassy and Dean that raise the suspense of the story. Also, there are many twists and turns that keeps the reader on their toes. Up till the end, I had no idea who the person spying on Arabella was, and I enjoyed how it all connected.
However, probably the only downside I see to the story is the side plots. While I loved the main theme of the story, where Arabella is trying to solve the investigation, there are quite a few side stories which digressed from the plot. For instance, I liked Yvonne’s ‘exorcism’ story, and Mikey and Aaron’s storyline when she bumps into some stranger. But I thought they had no connection to the plot and could have been avoided.
Apart from that, this was a fabulous creepy, suspense, crime, supernatural thriller which was a lot of fun to read.
Arabella has a unique gift that she uses to help lost souls find peace and distraught survivors find comfort. While that sounds nice, every encounter gave me chills. I definitely wouldn't remain sane if I was burdened with Arabella's ability to see and speak with the dead!
The story is well paced and the plot tension builds nicely throughout the story. The living are well developed, and the ghosts' backstories are interesting. I didn't anticipate the big twist, and that always make for an enjoyable read.
I’m not sure how to add the .5 but that is the rating I give it. I enjoyed it. From the first page till the end. The development of the story was interesting and I enjoyed the suspense. It kept you wondering till the end. And it kind of makes sense. I’ll just leave it at that. I’m not a huge fan of mystery and suspense because I don’t like the guessing part but this book is worth the read. If you are into suspense and mystery this is a great read.
