I have mixed feelings about this album. It's content is almost identical to an early digital (now unavailable) LP Sir David, the Bach Choir, and the Philip Jone Brass Ensemble made for London in the early 1980s. As much as it pains me to say it, this time out, the choir and brass seem a little harsh. To my ear, the choir can be a little shouty, brass can be blatty and militaristic, and the great John Scott generally takes a back seat on the organ. Good, but not quite great. That said, there are no dogs or clunkers on this disc. The performances are still better than most and some of the selections are gems. This version of John Rutter's Star Carol is one of the best I've heard, and if you aren't familiar with Wilcocks' wonderful Birthday Carol (one of his relatively rare original compositions), you've missed out. I've been looking for a recording for 20 years and this one doesn't disappoint. Those two alone are worth the modest price of this disc. The advent processional, Of the Father's Heart Begotten, is another elegant rarity. If you just want the basics -- Wilcocks O Come, All Ye Faithful & Hark the Herald with organ and brass -- look for Trinity Church - Boston's Candlelight Carols. Look to Family Carols to flesh out your holiday music collection and re-energize your cheer. At this price, it's a steal and well worth it.

This cd is the closest thing I've found to a record of my favorite Christmas choral music. Has most of the songs from the record (Fanfare for Trumpets) and a few I've never heard before which are lovely. Unfortunately, on the cd, as opposed to the record, the lyrics are not clear and the brass often overwhelms the choir.

I wasn't really expecting much from this one at first...but it surprised me a bit...

This might even be a permanent fixture on my Christmas playlist...
