From the acclaimed author of Home Cooking comes a heartfelt novel about a midlife crisis and a woman tired of being taken for granted—and a reminder that family, like happiness, can take many forms.

"Sheer perfection."
Elin Hilderbrand

To the rest of the world, Polly Solo-Miller Demarest lives acharmed life. She has a beautiful home, a dashing lawyer husband, and two delightful children. But beneath this idyllic surface, the pressure of being the “perfect flower”of an illustrious family—and a stable, always-available wife, mother, and daughter—are getting to her. The spark has gone out of her marriage, and to her own surprise, she’s having an affair. What follows is at once cathartic and provoking, and both may be necessary states in order for Polly to become the kind of person she wants to be.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Utterly delightful.... Sophisticated, funny, knowing,clear-eyed ... and entirely affecting.” —The Washington Post

"When I read
Family Happiness, I felt like Laurie Colwin had been reading my mail: she was putting language to feelings that I had never expressed and I felt almost unhinged to be reading about them in a book. If you’ve ever been in a relationship with another person, if you’ve ever had a family, you need to read this book." —Ann Patchett

"This novel is sheer perfection. Colwin is so delicate with her characters that you love all of them equally, whether or not they are on the conventional side of morality." —Erin Hilderbrand

“Colwin wrings magic from ordinary lives.” —
Entertainment Weekly

“Consistently amusing and ultimately surprising.” —
Newsweek

“Colwin is a bard of burgeoning adulthood.” —
The New Yorker

“The glittering, generous, delicious world of Laurie Colwin’s fiction is a gift and a lodestar. When writers speak of our favorites, our literary godmothers, her name invariably enters the conversation.... We need her voice, her heart, and her paean to joy now more than ever.” —Dani Shapiro, bestselling author of
Inheritance

“If anyone wrote eloquently and magnificently about affairs of the heart, it was Laurie Colwin." —
San Francisco Chronicle

“Laurie Colwin’s great subject was happiness—whether romantic, familial, domestic, or culinary—and she managed to write about it with both élan and emotional depth.... How wonderful it is that her books are still with us.” —
The Christian Science Monitor

"Colwin had the power to make her readers believe in life’s possibilities.... Her books still have that power.” —NPR

"An infallible recipe for happiness: read as much Laurie Colwin as you can.” —Emma Straub, bestselling author of
All Adults Here

“Colwin writes with such sunny skill, and such tireless enthusiasm.... One reads with fascination the steps by which lovers in one story after another stumble upon their forthright declarations.” —Joyce Carol Oates,
The New York Times Book Review

"A writer whose rare gift it was to evoke contentment, satisfaction, and affection.” —
The New Yorker

“I have loved Laurie Colwin’s work for forty-some years, all of it, every honest, deep, friendly, funny, heartbreaking, hopeful word.” —Anne Lamott, bestselling author of
Almost Everything and Dusk, Night, Dawn

“Colwin wrings magic from ordinary lives.” —
Entertainment Weekly

“To read Laurie Colwin, whether her wryly eloquent fiction or her richly detailed nonfiction, is to enter the sensibility of a singular human. Long before there were food bloggers and Bookstagrammers, Colwin understood that strong opinions and witty failures could appeal to readers of all ages and stages.” —Bethanne Patrick

Family Happiness displays a richness of characterization reminiscent of nineteenth-century British novels.” —Los Angeles Times

“[Colwin’s] intricate worlds—full of people who lovingly revolve around one another, with occasional pit stops in their kitchens, dining rooms, and local coffee shops—have been a refuge from my own overcomplicated life more times than I can count.” —
Bookforum

I found a reference to this book in one of Ellen Hildebrand‘s books. So I decided to read one of the books of Laurie Colwin. This book was a beautiful example of how simple writing can touch the very core and heart of one’s soul. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I will now read more of this authors books!

This book was a little slow or difficult for me to get into because of her style of writing, but I hit a certain page, and ...I hung onto every word. I can truly identify a lot of what this woman goes through in her life. I really ended up enjoying the book and was very happy with the outcome. It is a good book about family interaction, complexity and the relationship the main character has with everyone else in the story. The sexual content is only implied, not detailed or really descriptive, so there should be no offense taken to anyone who does not care for this aspect of the story. Yes, it is a bit dated, but I imagine the reader audience would be a mature woman. I appreciated her incite into her complex life. This book is different than any other I have read.

This was a real miss for me. As soon as I finished the book I felt a strong need to look at the Amazon reviews to see what I was missing. Many of my favorite authors are female; Anne LaMott, Dani Shapiro, Barbara Kingsolver, Ann Patchett. I picked this book up because there was a glowing review from Dani Shapiro on the back cover and I saw a positive video review by Anne Patchett online.

I wasn't drawn to any of the characters at all. All the men in the book seemed to be some weird caricature or extreme. I am 58 and run in a lot of circles. I have never met anyone like any of the men in this book.

I understand perfect Polly's struggle but good lord I felt like the description of her life and circumstances was repeated over and over again for at least a hundred pages. I am not a woman but I can certainly appreciate that large parts of our society make women feel they have to live up to some unattainable standard. I disagree with that. As a reader I like the new Polly better than the old. I assume we all do. I think I would much more enjoy and appreciate a book about her as she works and struggles to establish the new Polly. How does this Polly deal with her parents, all her completely odd (and unrealistic) siblings, her marriage, raising her children, and of course....her artist friend?

This was the first Laurie Colwin book I have read. She is clearly a great writer. I have a copy of Home Cooking. I will give that a shot at some point.

Laurie Colwin is one of my favorite authors. I am so glad her family commissioned audiobooks of her works. The narrator is wonderful and brought to life characters who have stayed with me for years.

Beautifully written with dry, delightful humor. Wouldn’t recommend for those who find themselves spinning in their heads endlessly with “what ifs...” Polly’s mind will exhaust you.

It was a somewhat interesting read, hence I finished the book. But what horrible people in it. Everyone is a snob, even the painter. The main character Dotti, cheats, lies , makes it all like her husband fault. After he changes , pays more attention to her she intends to end her relationship with the neurotic painter but then says screw and keeps cheating on her husband. This book drivels with upidy opinions, everything gets looked down on and that's by the writer herself. Seems like almost a period piece written in the 18 hundreds. Not one good character, her mother is awful , both her brothers are and her father don't care. Beate is the most miserable of them all, the Swiss should sue over the way their people are portrait. Like I said it was entertaining because the writer uses words and plot well but again I do like to cheer for someone and nothing of the sort in here

As a first time reader of this author I am very moved by the theme. A life unexamined turns painful and therefore interesting. This way of life is so foreign to my experience that I did a lot of reflecting which I enjoy greatly. I will recommmend!

This question is asked quite a bit in this book. I read this because it was rated one of the best books in a newspaper article that I read. Well, I do not agree with that but I did enjoy the book. If you want to ponder fidelity this is the book for you. I did like how the wife "found herself" and stood up for herself as time went on.
