From the Author

Sydlynn Hayle woke me in the middle of the night, forced me out of bed and to my office so I could write down the following:

My mom's a witch, my dad's a demon and I just want to be ordinary.

She hasn't let me rest since. Snarky, sarcastic, slightly awkward, but always honest, Syd will lead you where she's taken me--into a world where the extraordinary is commonplace, where vampires, witches and demon cats are family and school bullies fall outside the norm. Where magic is as real as a batch of chocolate chip cookies and coven rituals ruin every Saturday night.

Family Magic is the first book of the Hayle Coven Novels.

I downloaded this book as a freebie and was a little wary of it because of the demon/witchcraft content. I am a christian and I'm not comfortable with the direction in which some authors take these subjects. Don't get me wrong, I'm no nun & certainly never claim to be! I love a good fantasy and that's exactly what this was. The story as a whole wasn't dark & demonic like I was afraid it would be.

It had good, well-built characters and the plot-line was entertaining and moved at a good pace. I have to mention that the author really won me over with her writing. She really put clear pictures of everything in my head without over doing it & being too wordy. There have been few times that I have found a book that was so well written that I found myself reading it out loud like poetry. This was one of those times. I think I enjoyed the flow and rhythm of the writing as much as the story itself!

I also very much appreciate the fact that, although this is the first in a series, I wasn't left hanging at the end. I felt perfectly content when I finished the book and even though I look forward to reading the next in the series, I don't feel that I'm being forced to in order to complete the story.

Being a powerful witch as well as the daughter of a demon lord is not exactly the best recipe for being normal in a modern high school. Add two attractive boys and a bunch of vindictive cheerleaders and things can get complicated.

Syd, the main character, transforms from being the victimized new kid in high school to an assertive person who accepts her magical powers in order to keep the leadership of the Hayle Coven of Witches from falling into the hands of some truly nasty characters. As we read this story from the main character's point of view, we are right there with her as she rebels against her mother, denies her inherent power and tries to cope with everyday high school politics. The way in which she tells her story is quirky and often funny. Her inner dialogue is downright hilarious at times!

I thoroughly enjoyed the numerous versatile characters in this book - a rather special cat, a couple of vampires and a very, very old dog. And let's not forget the variety of witches, a few colorful teenagers and a crazy grandmother who can only be subdued by chocolate and tequila and who has invaluable information and wisdom for her family - during her infrequent moments of lucidity, that is.

As this is the first book in the Hayle Coven series, the author takes the necessary time to introduce her readers to the characters and the world they live in. The action, suspense, Syd's teenage dramas and numerous disputes are artfully balanced by lovely moments of family solidarity, a touch of romance and some out-and-out humorous situations. The close relationship between the main character and her not-so-normal little sister is sure to warm your heart. Thus I can safely say that there's not one dull moment in this story!

Although this is a young adult novel, I would strongly recommend it to readers of all ages. I, for one, am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series by a very gifted author. (Ellen Fritz)

I really enjoyed this story! I actually lost sleep because- "Maybe I'll just read one more chapter before lights out..."

Even though this book is paranormal in nature, the parent/child & teenage drama in this book felt real. I loved Syd's "voice"! The author did a great job with each and every character, even the secondary ones.

There is a cuss word or two, but I consider this a good-clean-fun read! Can't wait for the next one :)

I grabbed this as an Amazon freebie and was wonderfully surprised! We're introduced to our heroine, Sydlynn Hayle, daughter of the current witch coven leader, and thrown into her sixteen year old life. Half witch, half demon, Syd is trying to find the human part of herself and denies magic. Her family needs her and with betrayal and mistrust in the coven, Syd must decide whether to use her powers to save her family, or walk away forever. Mix in her sweet mother, her *good* demon father and an adorable little sister with horns, and we all envy Syd....just not the hard choices she faces. This is a good choice for young adults, as we're introduced to teenage infatuation, but no more.
I would happily pay full price, and am sure I will be for the next book in the series! Her sneak peeks at two other books have me looking for more by this author! Thank you!

Part demon, part witch, Syd is obviously not like other girls. But she hides who she really is in an attempt to try. When her family's powerful coven is threatened by insidious forces bent on destroying them, Syd has to make choices about her magic that could affect the rest of her life.

This book has everything. Great family drama, hot boys, magic, witches, demons and difficult choices. This is one of my new favorite books of 2011 and I CANNOT WAIT to read the rest of the series. Good thing this author wields her own brand of magic with the keyboard, because we won't have to wait long for the sequels.

A MUST READ!!!

Family Magic by Patti Larsen is an incredible book. I was almost instantly caught up in the story of 16-year-old Sydlynn Hayle, better known as Syd, and the coven of witches she calls family. Life isn't easy for Syd, what with the coven's leader as a mother and a demon as a father. To make matters worse, the coven frequently moves as its actions occasionally impact the "normals" they live amongst. When this happens the coven packs up and moves to a new location to avoid discovery, so Syd has moved around, a lot.

Being 16 is difficult enough without being half-witch, half-demon, but for Sydlynn, who only wants to be normal it is a living hell. She dresses like the popular kids and tries to gain acceptance, but the popular kids don't want anything to do with, especially once she makes the head cheerleader's hit list. From that point on Syd's life is made even more miserable and those who might stand with her are too intimidated to do anything to help her.

Life at home isn't any easier, Syd and her mother are always on opposite sides of everything and her grandmother is certifiably crazy - she lost her sanity in a battle to preserve Hayle coven years ago. Everyone does their best to keep Grandma at home and under wraps, but suddenly Grandma starts somehow escaping the wards that guard her and keep her safe in the house. Syd intervenes on more than one occasion, but all her grandmother keeps talking about is how darkness is coming, how darkness rises and light falls and it is beginning to wear on Syd's nerves. Grandma is difficult to deal with during her escapes and her senseless babbling annoys Syd. The only problem is there is a traitor in their midst and maybe Grandma's warnings aren't so senseless, if anyone would just listen.

I really liked this book.
