Episode 1. Child Protection
Guests: Jennifer Grace Barrett, Chrystal Buchan
In this episode we will be discussing what I think is the most important aspect of the family justice system. In fact, I think it's the most important aspect of the entire justice system, because we're talking about child protection. I'm sure every family court judge would agree with me when I say that the most heart-wrenching and emotionally draining cases we deal with are those that involve child abuse and neglect. And yet, it's very rare to see a television program that explains how the child protection system works. What is child abuse? What is child neglect? Why does it happen? How does the justice system protect children, and what happens when a child protection agency intervenes in a child's life? Our guests today are going to help explain all of this. First, we have Jennifer Barrett, who has been a lawyer for 23 years and has represented parents, children and child protection agencies. Also with us is Chrystal Buchan, who has been a lawyer for 18 years and frequently represents parents in child protection cases.
Jennifer Grace Barrett
Jennifer graduated from the University of Windsor Law School in 1985 and was called to the Ontario Bar in April, 1987. Jennifer practiced as a general practitioner in private practice in Belleville, Ontario, from April, 1987 until November, 2003. During that time, she developed a strong practice in the areas of family law and child protection law. In November, 2003, she and her family relocated to Victoria, British Columbia. Jennifer was called to the Bar in British Columbia in March, 2004 and continues in private practice with the law firm of Quadra Legal Centre. She has continued her practice in the areas of family and child protection law, with an emphasis on child protection law. As a lawyer involved in the area of child protection law, Jennifer has represented parents as well as the child protection agency in both Ontario and British Columbia. As a lawyer in this process, she has been extensively involved in litigation in the courts as well as in various types of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation.
Crystal's main area of practice is in all areas of Family Law, including separation and divorce, child custody and access, adoption and child apprehension.
Crystal has practiced with this firm in the area of Family Law since her call to the Bar in 1992. She has been a sessional lecturer in family law at the University of Victoria Law School, is accredited by the Law Society of British Columbia as a Family Law Mediator, and is an active member of the Victoria Collaborative Family Law Group.
Crystal has been a member of the Board of Separation and Divorce Resource Centre and/or a volunteer since 1993.
Episode 2. Children's Lawyers
Guests: Katina Kavassalis, Dan Goldberg
Justice Brownstone speaks with two lawyers from the Ontario Office of the Children's Lawyer (Katina Kavassalis & Dan Goldberg) about when children need their own lawyer; and what it is like to represent children. This is a rare opportunity to meet two lawyers that you would normally not get to hear from.
