This is not a book about werewolves in the classic, Lon Chaney Jr. sense. It's more about people who happen to have the ability to change between human and wolf forms. It's also about the choices people make, the consequences of those choices, and living with and getting beyond those consequences.
Michael has a lot going on in this compact novel. There are family issues, a disintegrating marriage, and the heartbreaking choice a parent is faced with when considering what is best for a child. And there is a group of people out there somewhere who don't like wolves.
The story includes interesting and unexpected twists and turns. It is populated with a number of everyday characters, the kind you would swear you've run into somewhere. Michael is very good at creating these characters and giving them a realistic world to live in.
This story revolves around Tommy Roling and his infant daughter Corrine. It is about living in a world with a special talent that others view with--at best--mistrust. It is also about those issues and choices I mentioned earlier.
You can read this as a magical fantasy, as a family story, or as a look at living, coping, making mistakes and seeking forgiveness. Michael's "Family, Pack" is all of those. It's also a rewarding story and a great lead-in to the second novel in this series, "Hunter's Moon."
I encourage you to read them both. They are fun and thought-provoking at the same time.
In a way, this is a coming of age story as Tommy is forced to be a responsible adult in order to care for his child. He makes mistakes along the way giving him a hint of vulnerability. Tommy faces personal trials in addition to mystery that befalls his small hometown.
Michael Jasper did a wonderful job creating the characters that inhabit the world he brings to life in Family, Pack.
I won't give the plot away in this review, but I will say that it's refreshing to read about a dad (instead of a mom) who matures enough to do the right thing for his children.
THE StORY WAS EASY TO FOLLOW WITH SURPRISES AND LAUGHS. THE NARRATION WAS GOOD. I REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO ThIS AUDIO BOOK
