About the Author

Michael Jasper is fascinated with exploring the places where the normal meets the strange. In pursuit of this fascination, he has published nine novels, a story collection, and over six dozen short stories, along with a digital comic with artist Niki Smith. He's also put together two how-to books about how to create digital comics (also with Niki Smith) and how to create and market digital books. In the past he's tried bartending, teaching junior high, painting houses, being a secret shopper, working construction, and many more jobs; he prefers fiction writing. For his day job, he works as a technical writer. He lives with his family in North Carolina, and his website is michaeljasper.net.

Format: Paperback
I read a version of this book provided by the publisher. I also know Michael and always enjoy his writing.

This is not a book about werewolves in the classic, Lon Chaney Jr. sense. It's more about people who happen to have the ability to change between human and wolf forms. It's also about the choices people make, the consequences of those choices, and living with and getting beyond those consequences.

Michael has a lot going on in this compact novel. There are family issues, a disintegrating marriage, and the heartbreaking choice a parent is faced with when considering what is best for a child. And there is a group of people out there somewhere who don't like wolves.

The story includes interesting and unexpected twists and turns. It is populated with a number of everyday characters, the kind you would swear you've run into somewhere. Michael is very good at creating these characters and giving them a realistic world to live in.

This story revolves around Tommy Roling and his infant daughter Corrine. It is about living in a world with a special talent that others view with--at best--mistrust. It is also about those issues and choices I mentioned earlier.

You can read this as a magical fantasy, as a family story, or as a look at living, coping, making mistakes and seeking forgiveness. Michael's "Family, Pack" is all of those. It's also a rewarding story and a great lead-in to the second novel in this series, "Hunter's Moon."

I encourage you to read them both. They are fun and thought-provoking at the same time.

Family, Pack is a wonderful tale about a young father, Tommy, learning to balance single fatherhood with being a werewolf. I quickly connected with Tommy and found myself cheering for him throughout the story. Right away I wanted the best for him and his baby daughter Corrine.

In a way, this is a coming of age story as Tommy is forced to be a responsible adult in order to care for his child. He makes mistakes along the way giving him a hint of vulnerability. Tommy faces personal trials in addition to mystery that befalls his small hometown.

Michael Jasper did a wonderful job creating the characters that inhabit the world he brings to life in Family, Pack.

This is a nice twist on the classic werewolf story. The contemporary setting and real place-names lend an air of believability to this urban fantasy.

I won't give the plot away in this review, but I will say that it's refreshing to read about a dad (instead of a mom) who matures enough to do the right thing for his children.
