As a figure in social politics in Renaissance Italy, Alberti is a pompous, chauvanistic windbag on par with Cato the Elder. And indeed his work in many ways resembles Cato's On Farming, being a manual for running a household written by a man who could not have been more disconnected from that activity. But as a window into Florentine daily life and traditional values, the value of Alberti's work cannot be understated, and this excellent translation brings a lot of wit and a conversational tone to the table, something that is often lost in works like these.

I already wrote a paper about it, so I won't say too much here, but it's striking noting the similarities and differences in family values then and now. This work is a fantastic jumping off point for studying women and the family. Alberti's opinions on women do him little credit, but he provides excellent context for understanding gender roles in his time.
