Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of the original soundtrack to the 1966 motion picture scored by Paul McCartney. The recording was arranged and supervised by Beatles producer George Martin. The soundtrack recording begins with McCartney's theme, 'Love In the Open Air, and contains 12 more (untitled) instrumental themes suited to the onscreen action. For his composition, McCartney was initially inspired by the sound of brass bands, familiar to his childhood in the North of England

Composed in late 1966, THE FAMILY WAY soundtrack was the first time that Paul McCartney composed a work on his own (without sharing credit with John Lennon). The original soundtrack album, issued on Decca (U.K.) and London (U.S.) and performed by The George Martin Orchestra, has been a long-sought collector's item. Up until now, the only official CD version was the 1995 Philips Classics remake, The Family Way Variations Concertantes, Opus 1, commissioned by McCartney himself, and performed by French-Canadian guitarist Carl Aubut with chamber-music musicians. In 2003 a Canadian indie label, Montreal-based XXI Records, did release a semi-official CD, The Family Way Original Sound Track, containing both the George Martin and Carl Aubut versions, as well as three Family Way tracks performed by the Quebec-based La Flûte Enchantée Quartet (from a CD called Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool), but the Martin version was mastered from vinyl (a "needle-drop"), which means that the master tapes were either unavailable, or that the release was legally questionable.

Now, Varèse Sarabande Records' Varèse Vintage imprint has finally released an official CD of THE FAMILY WAY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK, remastered from the original stereo master tapes, with the track listing featuring all of the musical cues, and a bonus track of "Theme From The Family Way," in stereo for the first time, originally released as a non-LP B-side under the name The Tudor Minstrels on Decca/London.

While John Lennon was off winning the war, Paul McCartney was composing the music for the soundtrack of the cute, but a little naughty, The Family Way. First released in 1967, it's been a long gestation for the music to see the light of day. The music was created by Paul and George Martin who transferred Paul's ideas into what was to become a soundtrack, with the theme as a single (both sides are here as bonus tracks). It failed to chart and the album was deleted shortly after its initial run. For many years the only way one could purchase the soundtrack was to import the Australian Decca Stereo release, which was still on the catalogues into the 80's. The music is quite charming, very "English" and easy on the ear. It sounds as though it was made on a sunny day and is most suitable for a picnic in the park. Lovely background music! The CD comes with an 8 page booklet which features the UK and US covers on the front and back pages of the book (it was the UK cover that made it to the Aussie release) and a very brief article on the music's origin. Some photos give an idea of the movie and if you want to know what the UK and US singles looked like, they are pictured as well. A nice, but essential purchase for the McCartney completists!

I never owned this one, and I am a big Beatles' collector, and going back to their arrival here in the USA, circa 1964. What I most enjoy is seeing the progression of Paul McCartney and his genius in not only being the brains behind the Beatles, but his continual ability to grow through the years with his intellectual pursuits in other musical genres, and with his other group, Wings, and his solo performances. The man is just amazing, and looking back on the 1960s is a continous pleasure for me.

In late 1966, Paul McCartney was asked to compose the theme music for "The Family Way," a British film based on Bill Naughton's comic play, "All in Good Time," and which would serve as the vehicle in which former child star Hayley Mills would play her first grown-up role. Perhaps intrigued by the challenge of writing for the movies, McCartney took time off from his Beatle duties to write a hauntingly lyrical musical theme titled "Love in the Open Air." With more than a little help from longtime Beatle arranger and producer George Martin, McCartney then created (or authorized the creation of) a baker's dozen variations on this single melody. These thirteen versions of that theme were then used to score the entire film, to surprisingly good effect.

At least partly seeking to capitalize on the Beatle connection, a soundtrack album was released on Decca records in the UK, with a stateside counterpart on the London label. As was the case with most soundtrack albums of that era, "The Family Way" LP soon went out of print (although, interestingly enough, not before inspiring a handful of other artists to record their own instrumental cover versions of "Love in the Open Air" as singles on other labels.) Although the record has surfaced in various bootleg and gray market reissues over the years, this release from Varese Sarabande marks the first official reissue of the album to be remastered from the original stereo master tapes.
