Editorial Reviews

These historic recordings are a superb collection of some of the greatest tunes from Hollywood, composed during the Golden Age of Cinema and affording nearly three hours of nostalgic indulgence. The compilation focuses on key figures of the early film composer generation, among them Max Steiner, Franz Waxman and Eric Korngold. From the deeply lush harmonies of Gone with the Wind, to the Wagnerian forces employed to evocative effect in The Bride of Frankenstein, these composers were masters of their art who knew how to wield a good tune out of the dramatic developments on screen.

Buyer take note - what Newton Classics has printed on the back insert as to what is included is this set is not what you get here.
What at first glance appears to be a straight reissue of 3 discs from the Classical World of Film Scores series from the 1970s, which was a glorious series of recordings RCA made with the incomporable Charles Gerhardt, is, upon closer inspection, a real curiosity indeed by what Newton Classics has described for its disc 1 of this set. Disc 1 is described as "Gone With the Wind and others", recorded in 1933-1939, in mono, conducted by Max Steiner himself. The booklet also lists this recording date and conductor (but no orchestra) along with the notation: "with Edward Eliscu, Val Burton and Will Jason, and Dorothy Dick...music and lyrics".
Imagine my surprise when I first started listening to disc 1, expecting an old, scratchy, mystery vocal selection from 1933, but instead I hear the music which Newton Classics lists as its Disc 2 on the printed material: "Waxman's Sunset Boulevard and others" in glorious 1970s stereo. Hmmm. I wonder, then, if Disc 2 is the mono vocals - maybe they just accidently switched disc 1 and 2 on the printed inserts. After all, Newton Classics is not known for any kind of quality control. So I listen to Disc 2, expecting the 1933 mono, mystery vocals. Nope. This music is not listed anywhere on Newton Classic's inserts - this is actually Charles Gerhardt's 1970s suite of orchestral music from Gone With the Wind. Disc 3 is actually correct (i.e. the disc matches the insert descriptions).

So, let's review. Disc 1, as described, does not exist in this set. Disc 2 is actually Disc 1 in the set. Disc 2 is a surprise selection which is not labeled anywhere the inserts or booklet. Disc 3 is correctly labeled and described.
