Interesting, because we had been saying all along that something was wrong with her but we didn't want the ADHD stigma. That's what it was to us, as stigma.
However, as a part of her job with a local school district, my wife advocated for children when teachers tried to have them "staffed" to Special Ed. Many times teachers would do this to get rid of kids they just did not want to deal with.
Our granddaughter is a young adult now. In High School she channeled her excess energies into acting and cheer leading. She finished high school and attended junior college for 2 years before deciding to take suspend her education for a period of time. During this period of time she decided that she wanted to work in a day care center and she did so for 2 years. Now she has made the decision to return to school.
This book should be an eye opener for parents dealing with ADHD or similar problems. Should I run across someone I will very enthusiastically refer them to this book to help them in dealing with their situation and to know that there is hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. Be proactive in dealing with this situation. Don't try to hide from it or hide it from friends and family.
Dr. Stern believes that those who have come before us and found a way to succeed are worth learning about. He should know, for he holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Stern is also the Founder and Chief Behavioral Therapist at the ADHD Gifted Center. In this book you will discover the many questions that he asked in creating an inspiring foundation that we can all learn from; such questions as how they do it? - what challenges did they overcome? - what was there attitude?
What I like about this book is the positive message of the famous people who struggled, yet overcame their difficulties by reaching into their untapped potentiality and exploding with a desire and belief that nothing was going to stop them; a life lesson for us all when faced with struggles that at times can be overwhelming. The stories of these superstars are not only inspiring, but illustrative for us, especially people with ADHD in coping, surpassing and finding a way out when none seems currently present.
The sad part is that not everyone who lives with undiagnosed ADHD has as much good fortune.Read more ›
Helping your child cope with ADHD and succeed in life is filled with real life inspiring stories of famous people - how they were like when they were kids, how their parents, teachers and friends helped them, and how they cope with ADHD. Every child is special and has unique gifts and abilities. You just need to know how to draw them out - for example, through hobbies and activities as told in the story of Ty Pennington.
This book will give hope and inspiration to all parents whose child may be suffering from ADHD. There's also a personal invitation to join the vibrant ADHD Facebook community by the author. Highly recommended.
Here are some of my favorite stories:
The Richard Branson story, a man with ADHD and still managed to build at least 3 major companies.
Michael Phelps and his battle with ADHD.
And the story of Justin Timberlake who suffers from both ADHD and OCD.
The book is well written and worth the price if you want to learn looking for a book that's more than just a clinical diagnosis of ADHD. This is more than that, it's about trying to inspire by showing stories of celebrities who have battled and won ADHD.
