In 1911, a sixty-nine-year-old grandmother, Fanny Mason, sat down at a typewriter, at the home of her son in Southend.
She began to write the story of her life; the story of an ordinary middle class girl in Victorian England.
Her original memoir, detailing her story of hardship and perserverance, reads like the synopsis of a Dickens, or Brontë novel.
This is an adaptation of her original work while sticking to all the known facts, in order to create something which reads a little more like a first person, Victorian novella.
The result, hopefully, represents an interesting story in a historical setting as well as a useful aide to understanding Victorian history, written in a style which should be easily accessible to younger readers, and therefore hopefully a useful resource for schools teaching Victorian history.
I have kept all the original facts, and Fanny's own words wherever possible.
The additional material consists mainly of; additional facts gleaned from research, imagined dialogue and letters based on those alluded to in her text, imagined additional thoughts and concepts which while not alluded to by Fanny might be in keeping with her character.
As such, this book inevitably falls between two stools, being neither strictly fiction, nor strictly non-fiction. I understand the term "faction" has come into popular usage, and I think this might fit that category.
I sincerely hope I have stayed true to her original intentions, while creating a work which is of more general interest beyond her own descendants.

An interesting insight into aspects of ordinary life in the 1800s. I enjoyed every moment of this book, it's a shame she didn't continue the story of the children growing up otherwise I'd have given it 5 stars.
