This is Nathan K., I do independent verification and testing of USB-C devices and peripherals.
The "USB-IF Certified" Fantany 85w charger and cord (TID 1020059 PN ARTODM85-BLK-03) are generally safe and OK to use. It has 5/9/12/15/20v levels are proper "Power Rules Compliant" 85w Power Delivery Profile (PDP). The cord is a USB2.0 5a cord per the eMarker. But the charger has rather annoying bugs that the USB-IF failed to catch during their comprehensive tests.
I still somewhat approve of this charger, it will work for MOST users without issue. It will work better than the Apple 87w for "General purpose" charging because of the +15v and +12v levels. But the errors below are quite annoying and result in unintended disruption in certain circumstances. (i.e. Google or Apple wouldn't have signed off on it.)
I'm more less annoyed at Fantany, more annoyed the USB-IF for not catching these bugs during their certification process. They are the "be-all-end-all" of checking USB things. In order of decreasing relevance (not severity):
1.) The charger crashes on voltage-to-voltage transitions.
This means if your device changes voltage levels during use, the charger will crash and disconnect. Chromebooks do this under certain circumstances. Certain dock peripherals do this under certain circumstances. Worst case, your thumbdrive will be disconnected from your multiport hub while you're using it -- or your device might shut off unexpectedly (if it has no battery).
2.) The BMC Eye Diagram is out of spec.
This means the "zeroes" and "ones" may be garbled at the end of a long cable. Minor issue for most users.
Most everything else about this charger is OK. It does better than 80% of chargers out there just by virtue of being UL and USB-IF tested. But if I'm spending $60 on a charger that is "USB-IF Certified", I expect the board to light up full green.... not have hiccups like this.
Pros:
* Comes with velvet bag, cable tie, good cable
* Proper 85w support with 5/9/12/15/20v levels
* Works better than Apple 87w for multi-device charging
* Will work perfectly fine for most people
Cons:
* Glitches with charger circuitry itself
* Will give headaches to people using delicate/complex USB-C products
