They are made in Indonesia. The casings (round, satin finish, dark grey, capped, about 4.7mm) are locally farmed, from sustainable sources of Pulai wood, by a co-op of local farmers and forestry management. (Visit their website for the fascinating symbiotic story.) The cores are wax-based, just under 4mm by my measurement, and well centered. I haven't sharpened them yet, because they come pre-sharpened to a fine point and the points last a good long time. The pigment adheres to the paper with very little dust left behind. They layer very well, blend beautifully, and combine with the white and the black pencils for a huge range of tints and shades. The cores are about the same consistency as a FC Polychromo, hold a fine point without breaking for detail work, and have no scratchy bits popping up in the cores.
When it comes time to add water, they dissolve completely and immediately without scrubbing, leaving no pencil strokes at all! The colors don't get muddy when they mix and stay predictable. A six hour lightfast test showed no discernible fading, although there are no lightfast ratings for these pencils to be found anywhere.
In my opinion, the best thing about these pencils may also be the thing that makes some people unhappy - they DO NOT REACTIVATE with water. The colors may not seem very saturated to some people, but the fact that they don't reactivate means you can add another layer to deepen the color after they dry without affecting the first, very much like Derwent Inktense pencils.
Note that they do not have color names (ALAS!) and the numbers do not go in order. I gave them names on my color chart, which you can use if you wish.
I tested these on Strathmore 100lb colored pencil paper using a Derwent water brush and also in several popular coloring books.
I haven't had any issue with breakage, and they sharpen nicely with my T'Gaal Sharpener. I also want to add that they did color much better after I sharpened them the first time. Make a color swatch and keep with the package as the colored tips are off just a little bit from the actual color of some of the pencils.
In closing, reasonably priced pencils in a nice color range and convenient package that works nicely with adult coloring books.
The pencils themselves have very hard leads, but color beautifully. They are so smooth and sharpen very nicely. I also have a set of 36 Prismacolor Verithins and these Fantasia pencils feel so much nicer. They feel heftier in the hand, are made of much nicer wood (in terms of sharpening) and are never scratchy like the Verithins. All in all, I highly recommend them!
