The game revolves around competing for various story cards that are in play. Players use people, creatures and locations from the Cthulhu universe to achieve their goals. The game seems a bit simplistic at first as players use basic arithmetic to determine whether or not they have enough points on their cards to win the story challenges. However, it is the event cards which add a lot of depth to the game play. Each event card is a one-shot effect that dramatically alters the game. For example, my wife has frequently used a "madness" card on me which allows her to take over one of my characters for the duration of her turn.
While the core set offers enough to get started, like most LCGs, you will need to pick up either more core sets or a few of the several expansions to deepen your card pool. This might seem a bit pricey at first; however, it is far, far cheaper than getting into a CCG like Magic.
If you have any interest in Cthulhu or card games, then pick this up immediately.
Physically the cards are quite good. The art is nice, they're easy to read and the cardstock is strong. They will last through a lot of play, though I still plan to get plastic covers for them when I get a chance.
I really like the way that Fantasy Flight is selling its LCG series. One of the things that soured me on Magic and other card games was the random nature of collecting them. With this game if you want some card, you buy the Asylum pack it's in and you get as many as you can legally play. Casual players will likely be happy for a while with just the basic set though.
One problem I did find was player who hadn't played a game like this before (Magic: the Gathering for example), saw it as very complicated. I don't think it is, but a few people found it hard to learn. For people new to this kind of game, I'd suggest following the steps in the rulebook closely and getting familiar with the cards as you first read it. And don't give up! You'll get it.
If you're interested at all in H.P. Lovecraft, horror themed games or fun in general get this game. You'll be missing out on a lot of fun if you don't.
This is not a Collectible Card Game (CCG) which means no need to buy a lot of booster packs to get the cards you need; this is a Living Card Game (LCG) - so you know exactly which cards are in every booster pack. The game is playable with just the Core Set but you will want/need to buy some boosters to expand/improve deck strategies. Again, since this is not a CCG, you will no which boosters to buy and you will get the desired cards. [BTW: Each booster comes with 3 copies of each card so you will also have the full allotment of whatever card you need for deck building.]
