Begin a Thrilling, Cinematic Campaign
In an Imperial Assault campaign, you can become a noble hero of the Rebel Alliance or take command of Imperial forces. Opposing up to four Rebel heroes, a single player commands the forces of the Empire, including stormtroopers, massive AT-ST walkers, and terrifying villains like Darth Vader. Over the course of the campaign, both the Imperial player and the Rebel heroes gain new experience and skills to enhance their powers.
Imperial Assault also offers a fast-paced skirmish game that invites you and one other player to engage in quick, head-to-head battles. You can complete key objectives or simply try to wipe out your opponent's strike team.
Expand Your Missions
As a bonus, the Imperial Assault Core Set includes both the Luke Skywalker Ally Pack and the Darth Vader Villain Pack. Both of these figure packs include a sculpted plastic figure to replace the token found in the Imperial Assault Core Set. I'll begin with a word of caution... the AT-ST has to be assembled, and the lower gun in particular can be very difficult to install (especially without breaking the guns off). So, be careful when assembling it.
Otherwise, all of the components are top notch. The cards use the same high quality card stock that is used in Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game Core Set. The cardboard tokens and map tiles are also the same quality/thickness as those in X-Wing. It comes with 11 six-sided dice, and they seem both durable and easy to read. Finally, the minis themselves seem very durable (with the possible exception of the front AT-ST guns which are pretty thin and probably subject to breaking of if you aren't at least a little careful).
I should also note that the game is based on Descent: Journeys in The Dark Second Edition, which I've never played. But, from everything I've read there are some substantial differences and improvements over the original. And, the good news is that I felt the game mechanic and the special abilities worked very well for the Star Wars universe (i.e., if I did not know otherwise, I would have thought this was all originally created for just this game it worked so well).
One particularly nice thing about this game is that it is actually two games in one.
First, you get the cooperative campaign game where up to four Rebel heroes go up vs. the game master playing the Imperials. There are 30 missions in the Campaign Guide, PLUS two additional missions with the bonus Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader figures. Plus, there are 10 "Story Mission" cards and 14 "Side Mission" cards in the base game, and it sounds like future expansions will also come with various types missions. You earn credits and experience points you can spend to improve your character and their equipment for later encounters in the campaign. So, there is tons of room for growth and lots of replayability in terms of mission.
Second, you get the competitive 1 vs. 1 skirmish game where you put together a squad and compete vs. another player's squad. This looks very promising, but my first impression is that there are not yet enough figures to get the most out of this format. For example, on the Rebel side you have figures for Luke plus the six heroes used in the campaign game. You can also play Han Solo, Chewbacca, a set of Rebel Troopers, and a set of Rebel Saboteurs... but you have to use cardboard tokens to represent these figures as the plastic figures are not included in the base set (they are scheduled to be released in future expansions). For Fringe you have minis for two Nexu and 2 sets of Trandoshan Hunters, plus a cardboard token for IG-88. You do get a lot more minis for Imperials, including Darth Vader, AT-ST, 4 sets of Stormtroopers, 3 Probe Droids, 2 sets of Royal Guards, 2 Imperial Officers, and more (and, you also get a few cardboard tokens for some additional Imperial figures). Again, the mechanic looks very promising, but it's hard to say for sure without having more options to play with just yet (and using tokens just isn't as fun as using minis... I plan on using my old Wizards of the Coast Star Wars minis until more minis are released for this game).
Finally, I thought I'd comment on one of the things I liked most about the game... attacks, especially ranged attacks. I really like that there is BOTH a "check accuracy" step and a "calculate damage step." When checking ACCURACY for a ranged attack, you add the NUMBERS on the attack dice together. You hit if it is equal to or greater than the distance to your target. So, let's say you add the accuracy numbers together and they = 5... if you target is 5 or less squares away any damage might get through, and if they are more than five squares away you miss regardless of what else you roll. If you hit, then you CALCULATE DAMAGE. Here you subtract the total number of block results from the total number of damage results. There are also some other pretty cool things you can do with the attack dice (like serge), and of course the defense dice can change things quite a bit with things like evade (which block surge) and dodge (which causes the entire attack to miss regardless of what the attacker rolled).
In conclusion, I felt that the MSRP of $100 feels a bit expensive for what you get (especially since you'll have to buy even more to get the most out of the game). The good news is that you can get it for a little less if you look around online. But, I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, tabletop games, and especially miniatures games, so this was a must have for me. And, the game itself is well done and seems like a ton of fun.
Cons: There is some clunky gameplay and a very steep learning curve with sometimes conflicting rules. But if you are familiar with this style of play (sightlines, distance = accuracy, dice hit points, etc.) you will probably love this game. I haven't come close to finishing the campaign and have played for many hours. Skirmishes are fun and you can just make up your own maps if you want more freedom. Tons of expansions and additional characters keep it new.
