The original rule book for this RPG has been around since at least the 80’s! In junior high I tried “Basic D&D” and didn’t care for it. A new kid moved into town and introduced me to both original The Fantasy Trip (TFT) In the Labyrinth. I bought the magazine-style soft cover rulebook and after reading The World of Cidri and how it was written more like an entertaining fantasy novel rather than a rule book, I was hooked. I’m a self-proclaimed TFT Evangelist and have come full circle with this game. I played face-to-face (F2F) for a year in the mid 80’s until it went out of print. I introduced my kids to the game when they were in low double digit years. In the 90’s I ran a successful play-by-post game for several years on Yahoogroups. In 2018 using the this new Legacy Edition, I started doing demos at game conventions. Next week I will be starting to GM my first F2F campaign, meeting every-other Wednesday with my wife and 5-6 D&D 5e converts. I win them over 1 at a time. 😬

The game is a true gem. In the way of rule set, not much has changed in 40 years. Characters are quick and easy to make, and it’s simple to learn how characters build (it’s a point-based system) and how the combat system works. One particularly cool thing is if you buy this book then all you need to play is paper, pencils, and standard six-sided dice!

Don’t be all like “oh? No d20’s, and d8’s?” because THIS combat system uses something that d20 systems do not: the Standard Deviation of the mighty Bell Curve! You roll multiples of dice to determine outcomes in this game and just the simple nuance of THAT is one of the facets that makes this game a gem!

The rules have been updated somewhat—after 40 years of “playtesting” by a veteran set of die-hard followers, the designer was able to uncover a few minor things that could benefit from upgrades. The book has all new artwork and in a lot of it you can tell pains were taken to keep the style of the images similar. I heard that some of the artists recreated their original artwork from the first edition to mimic the illustrations in this new one! Another place where the system has always shined is the writing style of the game designer: Steve Jackson. Colorful and entertaining words are woven together with his unique style of prose that makes this book easy to read on its entertainment value alone. From The World of Cidri to each monster description and the brilliant play-by-play example, it’s really what we describe as a “page turner”. Think of it like this: RPG’s are games with a complexity level requiring what would be, in other terms, a text book. THIS is a text book that is fun to read!

And on the subject of RPG rule systems and books, this single book contains the entire system. There are sections pointed more towards players with character building, how combat works (both the basic combat system and then a section for more advanced situations) and even rules for character occupations (jobs) and advanced magic rules that allow your wizard character to actually gain experience and advance by the successful creation of magic items! There is a GM section which is a great trainer for new game masters and has a lot of words of wisdom relevant to those of us who’ve been at the RPG thing for a while as well. There is a smattering of random generation tables which act as the perfect examples to illustrate how the 2d6 and 3d6 bell curve probabilities play out so you can also create your own. There is also The Creatures of Cidri—the “monsters” if you will. All the beasties are there from the original edition “Flora and Fauna” along with some clever and some terrifying new editions. This also contains all the player race choices and rules/descriptions for the non-traditional RPG race options that you may not find in your current rule system such as orcs, goblins, giants, gargoyles and reptile men!

At the end of the day, you’ve purchased a single rule book that is entertaining to read with fantastic game master information, much of which you can apply to any system, and a game that is fully functional and playable in A SINGLE BOOK which probably has a price tag less than a single RPG rule book from those other guys. You can’t go wrong picking up a copy of The Fantasy Trip In The Labyrinth.

I have the first printing and the POD. POD is a wonderful version. Binding feels more flexible, as does the cover. Hardback is $34.95 from Warehouse23, but you’ll pay for shipping. At $25 this would be a bargain. $29.95? You’re getting one of the finest games that simply disappeared from the market. It’s back, and it’s better than ever!

A long time ago, there was a simple game Melee, and its follow-up Wizards. Very simple games, but the simplicity was fun. You could read the rules quickly, make characters even more quickly, and play. It was primarily a dueling PvP game in the beginning. They added rules so that it could be a dungeon crawler. This rulebook was right before they morphed it into GURPS. Five stars for the memories, and for the reminder that simplicity does have its utility. [And on that note, I think that the complex systems that were clumsy triumphed over the ones that were elegant btw. But no system was overall best, for me. I liked the learning system of RuneQuest and the skill-rank system and action points of DragonQuest. But that's another discussion.]

There are going to be two kinds of people to enjoy this. Those (like me) wo loved this game back in the 70s, who are getting to ay this again (their copies worn out or lost over time) and new players who get to discover this classic.

I was excited to receive the book, but very disappointed with the low quality binding which began to tear within a couple of days. I sent it back and picked-up the pdf for $18 instead.

5 stars for content, -1 for poor publishing. Caveat emptor!

This is my favourite fantasy rpg, along with Cairn Rpg. Unlike Cairn, TFT is its own beast. It uses a D6 system instead of the familiar D20 mechanic of D&D and its many clones. The system can handle any situation with its clear simple and elegant game mechanics. Roll a certain amount of D6’s against one of your stats and the result modifies it according to the situation and you have the core game rule. TFT is fun to play and makes the tropes of magic & combat fun again as it simply gets players more involved. It’s not the mere attrition of D&D. Steve Jackson makes brilliant games that are clever and most importantly fun. My first choice in the RPG department. Buy it! Play it!
