I've now had the Fantom Green Drive for about 3 months. Wanted to use it a while and try a few different things before writing the review. Also my G5 Mac tower did not at first have an eSATA card... If you try transferring a couple hundred GB over USB 2.0, you can pretty much start it and go to work, it may be done when you return. With the MAC, the set up was seamless and with the new Tempo Sonnet eSATA card (see my other review), the transfers were lightning fast. The fanless operation had me concerned for over-heating, but I have to say after leaving it on for over 60 days now and using it daily for automatic file backup and frequent storage & retrieveal of files - esp movie files sized 50GB+, I am astonished at the performance of this drive. No perceptible heat emanating either. Read- and write-times over eSATA are still leaving me with that stupid look you get when technology is ahead of your comprehension... you don't have to like being left behind, you just have to accept it. Plus it's 'green' - apparently hard drives can consume dumploads of juice, and this one saves a few greenback saving on power consumption, which is a huge plus. I'd spent countless hours trying to find the drive with the best combination of speed, reliability and value, and I have to say I'm gloating a bit right now with the Fantom Green Drive!

First, the bad (so you know right away): As several other reviews have mentioned in various locations, don't count on the eSATA connection working for long. It worked fine for the first few months (I used it just once a week at most to backup my desktop drives). Then, it started working only inconsistently and I had to use the MUCH slower USB 2 connection. Now, the eSATA connection has not worked for a long time. On the good side, it worked very speedily when the eSATA connection on the drive was functional and I haven't had any complaints about the drive itself. It's just I would have bought a different and even pricier setup so that I could have used the eSATA interface. I wouldn't recommend this is you want to use the eSATA connection on the drive. (BTW, I got my rebate fine, but it really does take 10-12 weeks; I never saw anything about 5-6 weeks--I don't think many places typically promise a rebate in less than 3 months!)

I'll try to avoid repeating the common complaints leading to the failure of this drive: rattling death sound, inability to find files, etc. I'll also briefly mention the frustrations trying to contact Fantom's customer service: three e-mails and three phone calls with no reply until I finally, miraculously, reached someone on my forth phone attempt. And finally, the $45 flat diagnostic charge with no guarantee of data recovery, despite the fact that my drive failed within four months of purchase. And you foot the shipping as well. Rather than provide the company with another drive to refurbish and re-sell, while being stuck with a product that would most likely fail within six months, I decided to do my own diagnostic work.

These drives are not meant to be taken apart by anyone without the proper tools; that is to say, there were no easy screws to get the drive out of the shell. But, with enough application, it happened. And to my surprise, when I removed the external from the shell, was a giant Western Digital sticker plastered on the drive.

Western Digital has notorious USB problems and drive failures. When I researched external hard drives before deciding on the Fantom, I consciously decided not to buy Western Digital. They seemed to have a one-in-four failure rate. So I was pretty peeved when I discovered that I had inadvertently bought one.

Money is tight for most and when relatively expensive products fail on a regular basis, it breeds frustration. I am deeply frustrated with my external hard drive situation. I spent good money on a product that I feel, deceived me. The customer service response was less than stellar and their ability to help felt sub-par. I cannot, under any circumstances, recommend this product to anyone. If you do/have purchased one and it hasn't failed, consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, avoid at all costs.

Mine failed after 4 months of minimal usage. I back up my MacBook once a month and just this past week, the GreenDrive wouldn't respond to anything. I tried repairing it-- nothing-- wiping it and starting anew but that didn't work either. As far as I'm concerned, this product failed in performing its primary task: keeping my data safe and retrievable. It's a shame because the hard drive housing and design are so eye-pleasing. Save yourself a headache. Avoid this product.

So far, the only thing this drive does on my Window's 7 Professional 64 bit is kill my mouse and require a reboot to get everything working. My problems ONLY happen when I have this drive connected and when I try to run sync toy or the built-in Windows 7 backup....this drive stinks!! Obviously, it is having a problem with this HP 6130f system/64bit Windows 7 in terms of drivers.

I am ordering a Hitachi Simple Drive (none of this green drive garbage) instead because the Fantom customer service department refuses to respond to any of my requests for service. I also found on Microsoft's site that this drive and Windows 7 64 bit is still under "review" and Microsoft is working with the manufacturer...read: this drive doesn't always work with Windows 7 64 bit---seems to depend on the computer. A colleague of mine has Windows 7 64 bit and his Fantom drive works fine so obviously my computer may have other drivers that are conflicting with this fantom or this drive simply doesn't work well on this model HP (I won't buy another HP either but that's another review).

Very disappointed with this drive. I also had problems using Acronis in Vista 64 bit too and it always seemed to find "bad sectors" or showed delay write errors yet works fine with XP. I even ran chkdsk on it and did a full format in XP and no issues were found so this drive is not bad in any way--it's a compatibility issue either with drivers or conflicting with this HP hardware on some level or what not--I'm tired of troubleshooting the issue as I need this to simply work. An external hard drive via USB should NOT require this much effort or it's useless to any user. I ended having to subscribe to Mozy online backup which is excellent--no hardware and it just works plus covers the issue of saving data offsite!
