There were things that nagged me, though. The central character, Takkar, is woefully underwritten, muting the emotional payoff after the main plot is completed. Not enough is known about him to care that much. The numerous side quests, while initially satisfying, do get a little too repetitive. The combat is certainly nasty, but suffers from a lack of defense mechanics. No parries or dodge rolls here, expect to eat some hard hits when dancing with a cannibal. I also couldn’t help but feel UbiSoft missed an opportunity to enhance the uniqueness of the experience by failing to add more prehistoric creatures. Sabertooths, mammoths, and the occasional woolly rhino are present, but I would have loved to tame a big terror bird, run from packs of large terminator pigs, and hunt giant sloths. In the end, I enjoyed the game immensely, but I wish it reflected a tad more thought and imagination.
I loved stealthily taking down enemy camps from a distance with the owl and then dispatching the heavies with my spear. The scenery is beautiful and the audio effects were so good that after a while I could recognize all the animals by sound alone. The stereo sound was so accurate I could usually tell the direction and distance of allies and enemies like I was really there. This also was true for Far Cry 4.
Unfortunately, the game became entirely too repetitious. Despite the unique content and beautiful landscape, I grew bored with the game from just doing the same things over and over. This was unusual because I seem to like repetition more than most gamers. So if I got tired of it, I'm guessing most other folks will too. The side missions were just more of the same. The pre-order extras were additional content but those were just weird.
This game is worth playing, just put it on the bottom of your list until the price drops.
I strongly recommend this for anyone who liked Far Cry 4 given the mechanics are actually the same (and even improved with animal powers and more healing options). You get the same grappling hooks, the same need to take outputs with reward for stealthy attacks, projectile weapons, throwing knives, etc.
The only negative is the default difficulty level is too easy. I think it's adjustable, but I'm happy with it.
This is the game for you.
Want to befriend the most fearsome beasts and hunt with a wolf? Wolves are good friends in this game!
Want to hunt wooly mammoths? Then you can hunt to your hearts content!
This game has shamans who teach you to commune with animals, Ladies with ear issues, And the occasional crazy man.
But it is good!
It's also very challenging, And you have to learn early how to survive, Or fall along the wayside.
There is no such thing as easy, In Ten thousand B.C.E.
It's life or death, And only you can save your people from disaster!
- Animal Taming
- Stone age technology is interesting
- Bone crushing combat
- Intimidating atmosphere
- Most of the characters are stale
- Side activities can get old
Grab this game if you want a refreshing experience in action games because Far Cry Primal seals the deal.
